While some of my fellow progressives may feel that Republican Florida Congressman Brian Mast's proposed legislative response to the Stoneman Douglas murders doesn't go far enough. I'll take it. An assault weapons ban and universal mandatory background checks would save many lives. Thank you Congressman Mast.

If Florida takes these 2 steps does that dissipate will at the federal level to do likewise?
Not suggesting that, if likely so, that would make inaction by FL desirable on balance. I do worry that the clock may well be ticking on the current sense of urgency. It could well be that more states would do likewise if FL acts.

More on Rep. Mast in today's WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/how-one-florida-republican-came...
reminder to self: slow down, make sure to read news items before responding to them, lest you write something idiotic. I know, now, doh, that Mast is a US, not a FL, rep. And a Florida legislative committee voted to strip out bans on assault weapons and bump stocks while approving plans to arm teachers and allow more guns in schools. So more of the same crap going on there. The issue remains taking names and holding accountable at the polls those who took these actions in FL, as well as elsewhere where needed action is being blocked.

Hal... yadda yadda yadda...
It's not about "going far enough" it's more about going anywhere. Call me when the legislation passes into law.
This appears to be a politically safe stance for Mast to take. But like most issues dealing with gun legislation at the federal level a proposed law as his will die a quiet death in committee and or the Senate. Take for example:
Last March Mast voted in favor of the "Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act" HR 1181, which would have allowed veterans who are considered "mentally incompetent" to purchase ammunition and firearms unless declared a danger by a judge. The measure passed the House of Representatives, but ultimately stalled in the Senate.
03/22/2017 Senate Read the second time. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders.
