“Donald Trump is the biggest issue facing our country today,” Collins responded. [...] “Unfortunately, he has caused a lot of divide in our country, and until we can trust in him and the choices that he makes for our country, we cannot become united.”
Ultimately, Collins lost the interview portion of the contest to [...] Gabriela Taveras, who fielded a question about how Americans traveling abroad should interact with foreigners. We should let them know that “we as Americans are supporting them and that we are there to help them,” she suggested [...] (yeah, this sounds odd, but I think she meant we should support them here?)
On Thursday, when asked how the NFL should handle players kneeling during the national anthem, [...] Emili McPhail, emphasized that the protests are not anti-patriotic, but are “absolutely about police brutality.” “Kneeling during the national anthem is absolutely a right that you have, to stand up for what you believe in, and to make the right decision that’s right for you,” she said.
Not exactly the Miss South Carolina of old. (Bless her heart)

Well it took decades but it definitely looks like overall Miss America gals have finally flipped to the other side of the culture wars. What got me thinking that is running across this discussion thread just now @ Crooks and Liars inspired by something that Driftglass said: why waste so much time and effort on defining the Trump voter, it's clear he is Archie Bunker
Edit to add: I didn't check if any of the current contestants are wearing short hair styles, though. Wimmin are sposed to have long hair, and men short, it's in the Bible or something.

As long as the majority of the answers were "I want to help children", sanctity has been preserved and the world will continue to spin on its axis.

Emily Sioma shuts my mouth for me - first from Miss Michigan 2018 to advocate for sex assault survivors to last night's "let me just come out & kick you all in the ribs" throwdown -
Maybe Gen-Z's not all about financial security as purported.

Got me inspired to look for articles on how pageant culture might have changed since like the days of Jon Benet Ramsey. Found some change, but not the kind I expected.
Here in a June 8 New York Times piece, Josephine Sedgwick collected some statements upon the news of the changes instituted by the Miss America organization as follows
and she included this one:

I can't find her "social impact statement" in the article, but here she is, as a santa bunny:
