Six days after the US charged 12 Russian hackers with stealing and leaking DNC emails, a Microsoft executive says the same agency is targeting the midterm elections.

[....] Speaking on a panel at the Aspen Security Forum on Thursday, Tom Burt, Microsoft's vice president for customer security and trust, said that his team had discovered a spear-phishing campaign targeting three candidates running for election in 2018. Analysts traced them to a group Microsoft has nicknamed Strontium, which is closely tracked by every major threat intelligence company and is widely accepted to be run by the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency.

Burt declined to name the candidates during the event, citing privacy concerns, and didn’t say which party they belonged to, but implied they were candidates of note and running for reelection [....]

The Justice Department on Thursday issued a wide-ranging report describing the cyber threats facing the United States and the department’s tactics for investigating, disrupting and deterring those risks.

Most significantly, the report contains the first public description of how the DOJ will assess and respond to foreign influence operations like Russia’s 2016 election meddling.

“That policy reflects an effort to articulate neutral principles so that when the issue that the government confronted in 2016 arises again — as it surely will — there will be a framework to address it," Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in unveiling the report at the Aspen Security Forum. Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein on Thursday unveiled a new policy designed to counter Russian hacking and disinformation campaigns, even as congressional Republicans in Washington shot down an effort to provide states new funding for election security.

The moves come as intelligence officials are strongly pushing back on President Trump's apparemnt skepticism that Russia was behind the sweeping interference campaign that disrupted the 2016 election.

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
