Apparently, Mitt's Great Grandpa, Great Great Grandpa, and/or his #1 Grandpa were Mormon polygamists. The Great Grandpa fled the US to Mexico with a harem of wives after an anti-polygamy law was passed in 1882. Mitt's Dad was born in Mexico. Some of the Romney clan still live there south of the border. From Geraldo Rivera, Fox:

Mitt Romney's father, former Michigan governor George Romney was born in Mexico. That’s shocking right? Even though the story has apparently been out there for months, I never heard it. What is even more shocking is that the admission came from the virulently anti-illegal immigration presidential candidate himself.

So Mexico offered Mitt's family sanctuary and freedom to stay, yet Mitt doesn't want to grant the same to the children of those who came to the US from Mexico. Romney said he would veto the DREAM bill.
