The Bishop and the Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age

    Lost in Translation: virgin sapukko

People have been asking for months what the purpose of superdelegates is. Seems a simple formulation, self-immolation is to be avoided. Watching Trump, Cruz and Rubio play hangman should make it clear enough how to avoid the Last Train to Doomsville. Fortunately the Democrats have so far not been seduced by the sweet temptings of the Virgin Suicides. It's one thing to fight for a cause; it's another to anoint a hopeless delusion. The Republicans have been playing to fantasy for so long, they've forgotten they were playing. Romney thought he was safe following his koolaid-drinking pollsters; Cruz thought he was becoming statesmanlike crashing Congress into a wall again and again. Sooner or later they had to figure out they look less like Kinston Dunst at the prom and more like Carrie or even Jim Jones.

With all the bitching about the DNC, the "establishment" has been pretty accommodating. Its purpose is to avoid Apocalypto, and short of that let things play out. And so far it has. It's all good fun until someone pulls a heart out. The Mayans showed how far Virgin Suicides could be carried, regularly sending them into the abyss to placate the god of the volcano. The GOP has been self-impaling for 2 decades now, always appeasing some bizarre idol or other. Now they're cracking up. Literally and mentally. If it weren't for the hurt they put on everyone else, I might even be sympathetic. But mostly I'm just relieved we know how to play the game. We weren't always this smart. It comes down to this:

    versus this:

PS - I didn't mean to imply just because Trump has short fingers he's a virgin. In fact, he's assuredly a nasty old fuck which is likely the opposite, amirite?
