Twitter world is going wild about this. I don't think Maddow wants to tell everyone she's joking now.

Maddow just tweeted that she has Donald Trump's 2005 IRS Form 1040.

Right now the panel on Anderson Cooper on CNN has been discussing it for at least 20 min. now and it doesn't seem like they are near done yet with things to say (including Toobin, Gergen, .Begala...) And CNN has a huge headline about it on their home page.Cooper is doing a phone interview right now with Tim O'Brien, biographer of "Trumpnation", and he's arguing that they are not interpreting some things correctly "over on the Maddow show."

I think it was kind of a strange presentation, and ultimately ended up being a discussion about: (a) why tax returns are important (we know that); and (b) he paid a lot of taxes due to the alternative minimum tax. But nothing about his relationship with any foreign entities--it's the first 2 pages without the attachments (where all the information of much use would be).

Sounds like it's not clear where it came from and there is speculation it comes from a pro-Trump source? I did overhear them discussing whether whoever released it might be subject to criminal activity and then one of them suggested, well, it could have come from like discovery where there was litigation, like that. Anyhow, the administration is now presenting as they are the ones releasing it. And most commentators said it makes him look good in comparison to the 1995 (?) New York Times leak which had him taking a gazillion dollar loss, paying zero in taxes and that he could continue to deduct for like 18 years. But with this you rightly point out that whatever would be the interesting stuff, in the attachments, is missing!

And it's just his 1040? Anyone who knows anything about people with corporations knows that doesn't tell you a helluva lot about what they actually make and what they pay in taxes. They can hide so much in a corporation, also just make up any salary they want to pay personal income tax on that year. One year make it high, another make it low. Meanwhile a lot of your expenses are paid by the corporation (s). That's sort of why I never got all het up about the release of tax forms with him, because he's not your average guy running for president One simply couldn't easily figure what taxes someone like him was paying, some years there would be more personal, other years more corporate and vice versa. Plus, I know most people in commercial real estate would do a separate corporation for each project, with separate tax forms, of course, and separate salaries, if any, and different officers, and distribution of profits or not, and capital investment of personal funds in the corporation, or not. Etc. etc. It just would be very hard to figure out the actual income and taxes of someone like him even if you could see all his personal tax returns and all his corporations' tax returns.. Comparing him to that which an average person with a salary earns and pays in taxes would be far worse than comparing apples and oranges.

Sorry I didn't see this last night AA, and you're absolutely correct that the form without the schedules is not worth much, not to mention the distinction you point out between one's personal taxes and its relationship to one or more corporations. In Trump's case (and I'm no expert), I understand he and his kids have myriad what in NY are called LLCs, or "limited liability corporation (or company)." That obviously makes his stand-alone personal return even less useful.

Trump probably leaked this nonsense to divert from Russian ties, a disastrous health care bill, emoluments clause violations, racist Steve King who walks in lockstep with Steve Bannon, and Obama microwaves, etc.
Edit to add:
And the Kushner deal.

Maddow is awful, as Daily Howler points out over and over. She's a child in a grownup seat, never managing to take the news she's pimping seriously, always going for the gags. Perfect foil for Trump.

Lots of splainin' IMO.

Jack Shafer in saying he is okay with what she did, basically speaks quite well for me on her major downsides:
I especially don't cotton to the "passenger on her news bus" thing, because it's just like Limbaugh: lecture, lecture, lecture with mega drama added....she is much more palatable when she has guests to interview. It's the drama queen thing I guess bothers me the most, as Lawrence O'Donnell lecturing on his show doesn't turn me off in the least.

Watching rerun of Rachel's show tonight and she is not doing a mea culpa but is attempting to defend by explaining why this is still interesting.
Both reasons she has given so far solve the mystery for me of why such a high personal income claim with high payment of taxes when it is likely that through planning and accounting, he didn't need to claim so much personal income
