Limbaugh announced in February 2020 that he had been diagnosed with advanced stage 4 lung cancer.
Former President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the 2020 State of the Union, calling Limbaugh “the greatest fighter and winner you will ever meet.”

Toxic palaver
Exudes from the cadaver,
seeking to be Free.
The medal from his brother
Hangs low from Devin's udder.

He mentions the start of talk show popularity with truck drivers, I forgot about that til now but noticed it at the time, it was a surprising phenomenon. It really started with working class like that but then it moved to lots of white collar types all of a sudden uncloaking as conservatives, as if they had been afraid to speak before, they would have "Rush rooms" in restaurants for lunch where they played his show while people ate lunch. And he got popular real quick with the Wall street set talking economics. It was really strengthening of the Reagan coalition. The big difference from Trump: was NOT POPULIST. One thing that really hit me listening to it in the car from time to time iss how he would always have one or two callers selected for lecturing, they would call in and profusely profess their fandom, try to get approval, and he would disagree with them and tell them how they didn't have it exactly right and correct them. THE genius "with one arm tied behind my back" NEVER had experts as guests, always people who expressed fandom of the genius who had to be further instructed, not as smart as Rush, like a preacher would do. So he was like Trump in some ways, different in others.

Ah, Taibbi - when he gets a good bone he's a really good writer. Even got me sidetracked with the Bo Jackson-Brian Bosworth story. Yeah, Limbaugh was some kind of Rocky show every day, we can beat them bums, and the identification of the crowd with his gloating. Limbaugh piped to the troops nonstop cemented hardcore Republicanism for the military. When people talk about Trump or someone's "racist talk", half the time you can't see it - but it was the background chatter of Limbaugh and similar - a few dog whistles and all those hours of indoctrination, victimhood, come rushing forward. The Trump-Limbaugh link makes more sense than others - cut out the middleman, let me rant to the audience. That macho braggadacio. I still don't know how much Limbaugh etc al pumped Trump up, vs how much he just assumed their mojo, stole their crown. But somehow a good chunk of the public was swayed that he was the rightful heir.
