Liberal explanations for what's going on in black communities always seems to start and stop with the prejudice of white conservative southerners. Questioning the western medical establishment is perhaps the one thing that the entire African diaspora has in common.

India's Tuskegee?

A mixture of distrust of their current medical care and the memory of the syphilis experiment impacts willingness to take the vaccine among Black residents of Tuskeegee, Alabama.

The obvious difference between Tuskegee's syphilis experiment and the COVID vaccine is that therapy was withheld in Tuskeegee.

Now here's an op-ed that I am not ashamed to say strikes me as condescending nanny state racism to the max, it basically says my people are still really stoopid and uneducated as hell and can't decide for themselves what's good for them, we need to replace white systemic racism with grownup elite blacks treating the rest of "my community" as stoopid idiots who fall for advertising targeted at them as a demographic
no wonder more black males voted for Trump and GOP downticket this time with guys like this leading local legislative Black Caucuses.
(Not to mention way to make menthol cigarettes more desirable as a cultural symbol. Lessons of Prohibition, anyone?)

Wouldn't it be more fair to have a state sponsored campaign to promote menthol cigarettes to white people?
By the way, whats with all these links to the WP? Did you just subscribe to the Washington Post? Do you realize that you just forced me subscribe to WP? Are you getting kickbacks for each new subscription?
by ocean-kat on Sun, 02/28/2021 - 5:28pm
That's the Amazon connection for you - someone's gotta help Bezos pay off his alimony. You've seen "Jeff" hanging around? That's right - the bald guy's taken an interest in our little community. So yeah, a subscription is the least we could do.
by PeraclesPlease on Sun, 02/28/2021 - 5:36pm
yeah all joking aside I've been paying for both, because NYTimes got so woke, and WaPo had mo better on Trumpster follies the last year or so. I should really think about cutting it now, tho, and I've got to keep the NYTimes for the local. Maybe I can get the cable bill down enough to keep WaPo, we'll see. Hope you've at least noticed I tried to paste a lot of text when I thought it was an especially good exclusive, just to share. WaPo really is better than it used to be, mho!
(You know, comes to mind, one upside to this being a small group here at Dag is: nobody is going to bother us about pasting a lot of text copy, especially in comments and not in posts, cause that's very arguably "fair use", is like a college seminar using it or some such... while if it was a big audience it would be a whole nother thing)

I've been informed I'm too serious. Please warn the others.

BUT I always thought you were mastheaded because he needed more "witty repartee"
by artappraiser on Sun, 02/28/2021 - 6:05pm
That's my porn name - thought you'd notice. Someone's gotta draw the crowd. When they said "mast head" it was completely different from what I expected. Most haven't even worked the pole before.

I really did subscribe today because of all your links. But I've been thinking about it for a while. I got pissed when I paid $80 for a year and a few months later they offered a year for $29. So when the year was up I unsubbed. But it was only 29 for a year so after several months I resubbed. In a year it goes up to $100 so I'll unsub again then. My SS is enough to live on but luxury items have to be carefully considered.
But of course now that you got me subbed you're gonna drop it. /sigh

yeah it's like a full time job bouncing around subscribing and unsubscribing services. (perhaps this is our payback for making fun of the parents' coupon clipping and moving their CD around from bank to bank to get a free toaster?)
by artappraiser on Sun, 02/28/2021 - 6:08pm
Really. I'm constantly bouncing around. For me having a streaming service is a necessity but more than one is a luxury I can't afford. I moved to HBO regularly for GOT and the Potter series of films. Back to Netflix for Orange is the new Black and Breaking Bad. I had to do Amazon for Orphan Black which imo is the best new scifi tv series in at least a couple of decades. Now I'm back to Netflix for several months.

In regards to copying and pasting text, providing a link to the source should cover the action.
WP is the only subscription I pay for at the moment. I find there are usually other sites that are free where the stories are referenced and I link to that.
AP has as a good vibe and I wish more bits showed up there.

on the content, the way in which it is written, I just found it extremely arrogant and condescending. and it's not about minors, minors are already prohibited. it's one thing to write to educate people, it's another to talk about (rather than to) your adult constituents as if they are children or wards of the state! If he wants to change the culture, talk to the culture you want to change, geez.

This nanny state nonsense annoys me. The republicans are right about it. But like so many right wing issues I can't make common cause with them because they go all outrage over it. Or they go to far in racist or bigoted directions that decidedly turn me off.
