There is a chilling side remark in the NY Times story detailling the abduction and death of an Italian doctoral student researching Egyptian labor unions.
"The investigation into Mr. Regeni's death could hinge on an Italian autopsy report, not yet released, which could answer whether he was tortured over an extended period, which would point to detention by a state security agency."
I'm pretty much on the side of those who argue that if being tortured to death, longevity becomes ones enemy. I am unwilling, for the obvious ew factor, to venture into the murky waters of quality v quantity.
The story, in any case, certainly puts another sort of spin on the historical evaluation of the results of the Arab spring which, if you have forgotten, was originally touted by the apologists of G.W.Bush as a corollary benefit of our mission in Iraq being so well accomplished.
