Stop Outsourcing Security Act + Update Comment by IPOA's Doug Brooks ????

Representative Jan Schakowsy and twenty co-sponsors will offer a bill that would phase out private security forces and require the military to use its own personnel to train troops and police, guard convoys, repair weapons, etc.

There are over 217,000 contractors in Afghanistan and Iraq, most of whom aren't accountable to the US government directly.

Schakowsy is approaching the matter partly as a cost-saving measure, since the contractors charge enormous amounts for their services.  It's estimated that 40% of the costs of the two wars go to contractors.

(Blackwater guards protecting Paul Bremer in 2004)

She also cites some of the reckless behaviors by Blackwater guards in the past, the flagging troop morale they have caused, and the cost to the reputation of the US.  Even after Iraq threw Xe out of the country, their contract had to be extended since no one else could fill the vacuum their leaving would cause.

According to Ryan Grim, while Schakowsy was in her office explaining her plan to reporters, her assistant got a message on her Blackberry saying that the deal for Blackwater/Xe to get the billion-dollar gig to train Afghan forces was almost sealed.

She does seem to grasp that in the current climate, this may be a hard bill to pass.  The International Peace Operation Association Lobbying group, and other lobbyists, may derail it.

It's another knee-slapper of a name; the group lobbies for private contractors for various war-related products and services.  The photo graces their site's front page.

Here a few of their current members:

DynCorps, Armor Group, Triple Canopy, Burton Rands, a total of 55 companies.

On their 'Benefits of Membership' page, they tout their ability toward providing:

Oh, the Cheneys and PNAC-ers and AEI-ers must have been laughing their asses off at the simplicity of privatizing war and war logistics and construction.  Money, money, money...

Now, as Schakowsky seeks to find more than the 20 co-sponsors it has now in the House, and Citizens United has freed up some funds for legalized bribery...how may bucks will be flowing into House members' hands to quash this bill?  There is a ferocious amount of money at stake.  There is supposed to be complete transparency on these corporate contributions; will that make any difference?  Who would track it?  Or find out in time to make any difference to the votes by way of embarrassing legislators?  (Yeah, yeah, I know, it's oxymoronic.)

Bernie Sanders is sponsoring the Senate version of this plan.  And Schakowsky has a petition to try to drive it from the People (whoever WE are).
