The Wizard Behind the Curtain

After a bit of thought & perusing through the archives, I'm pretty convinced Trump will give us the greatest chaos, most godawful scenarios, and we'll be tickled pink to give him what used to be an awful deal, but will now be thought of as a bad but acceptable alternative. [once upon a time Bill Clinton was a master of setting out an audaciously wide field too, to put the expectations on his side]. Trump knows how to play chicken and game it in so many ways, such as with the huge threats re: immigration, and if we don't up our game quick, we're in for a heap of trouble. He knows how to use anchors to set himself up and be remembered, to control the discussion, and how to deliver kill shots that deflate his opponents like Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush - remember those irresponsible, over-the-top comments (especially the one where he likes pilots who *don't* get shot down). A variety of sales, NLP, psychological tricks that tide him over from business to reality TV career to politician. So here are some listings of what Trump's got up his sleeves. Forget which policy - it'll all be the same. Pay attention now:

Neurolinguistic Programming - John Durf describes 1 trick:

"Association". It's associating/pairing a Stimulus to a Response. Tell the story of Pavlov and his dogs. Talk about the "our song" phenomenon (a song that transports you back to a moment with a special someone you listen it with).

I VERY quickly explain it to my clients by raising my hand and showing them my palm and saying something like "dog" or "computer", three or four times. Don't ask me why I choose those words. Then, when I raise my hand and show my palm without uttering a word, I ask "What does this make you think about?" Of course, they'll say "dog"/"computer". At the end of a session, I'll cheekily repeat the movement. It always gets a smile and they'll say the associated word.

Ever notice Trump's repetition and his raised hand?

    1. Create pleasant and positive associations with your product or service. This process is called anchoring, and it is intended to create that “spark” in your customer’s mind. You are creating an image in the client’s mind that is a powerful one.
    2. Develop more psychologically subtle questions for identifying your customer’s needs. This NLP selling technique can include questions about the issues the customer has with their current product or service and what specific features and benefits they want to have with a new product or service.
    3. Interrupt your customer’s patterns of thinking to overcome any objections. With this NLP selling technique, you want to move your customer on to another area of thinking, For example, if they are concerned about the price of your product or service, you might want to counter this by asking them what benefits they expect for their money. Customers always want to know “What’s in it for me?” Use this NLP selling technique to change their pattern of thinking and establish a different road into the sale.
    4. Use a position of authority to close your sales. As a rule, people find it easier to follow someone who is in a position of authority, thereby reducing the number of sales objections. For this NLP selling technique, you present your customer with quotes from or examples of well-known people who are using your product or service.

Meanwhile, there's Trump as Sal Ailensky:

“Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.”

“Never go outside the experience of your people.”

“Whenever possible go outside of the experience of the enemy.”

“Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.”

“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

“A good tactic is one that your people enjoy.”

“A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”

“Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose.”

“The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”

“The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.”

“If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside….”

“The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

And for the more traditional, Nabeel Aziz - rules of Copywriting:

    1. Sell benefits, not features

    2. Keep it simple so they understand you

    3. Perception is reality

    4. Repeat yourself. Over and over again

    5. Be relatable

    6. Be funny

    7. Create conflict

    8. Exaggerate to create contrast

    9. Use cognitive biases

    10. Use social proof (e.g. crowds & poll numbers)

    11. Use stories, not reason, to prove your point

More to discuss as we move on down the road, but the main tactic is invoking the crazy to control the conversation/the sale, and not getting bogged down in what normal folks would do. Trump already has everyone playing on his side of the court - he's in control, and whatever he do is "his way" or "bestowing a favor" (for which he'll certainly demand reciprocity).

Beware - he's been doing this a long time, and he's getting better at it as he goes along, and more emboldened with success and lack of resistance, and he has a huge group of followers for which he's been validated and vindicated. He even has his Twitter back. What do we have?

Another tactic he uses well is "always leave them guessing what comes next"; the cliffhanger.  His recent tweet that only he knows who the finalists are for his cabinet positions is a perfect example: Stay Tuned!  His answer to whether he'd accept the election results if he lost?  He'd keep us "in suspense".  Constantly saying he hasn't decided or made up his mind, but will "very soon".  He knows exactly how to use the public's natural curiosity to his benefit, and it works like a charm.

That and simply leaving everything undefined. Guess folks like that, much less is much more.

Calling them "finalists" says it all.  I am still hoping this faux-election will be nullified, or that the electoral college will do the right thing, or that Trump and Pence get swallowed up by a sink-hole (together) before January, 2017.

But then I also believed I could fly if I tried hard enough as a 12 year-old.  There were other things that I thought would never happen, but they did:  I got my drivers license, I got married, I adopted 3 children.  So maybe trump can yet be recognized as a failure, and also a loser.

Hmm, yes, maybe someone can adopt America, for the love of God and country do the right thiing

There's a good chance he'll be a success. And in fact "we"  may like some of the things he'll do- he's a New Yorker- more than the Republicans.  As he becomes more and more comfortable with his  power  he'll resent

    their preaching  and  ignore them.

    He'll

o build his fence and it will be popular.

o But not expel the immigrants already here.

o Erect a long overdue tariff wall and eliminate unemployment .

o Basically ally with Putin and life will be less dangerous . For us.

o Maybe change his mind on global warming . When it's too late to save a lot of islands.

And be re elected without breathing hard..

Probably the best historical analog would be Catherine the  Great. Or Bismark  except that he was relatively austere whereas Trump's" self indulgence" -if you take my meaning- will cause  Melania  to quietly absent herself except for ceremonial occasions.

No danger of his running for 3rd term . Why bother? Whoever does will be seen as a pale copy of the

real thing and either driven from office or emasculated. Or replaced by Ivanka.
