Emma I do not know!
I am an old man in his PJ's attempting to access the greatest informational tool ever seen by man or woman.
I have no answers.
But I do know that most folks who use this tool know damn well that the NEWS which was once portrayed on the three channels I viewed as a child could not be correct.
I learned early on that 100 people were killed in car accidents and gun accidents every damn day!
But that was not the news.
We cannot cover gangland killings in every city every day.
Let us pray!
We cannot demonstrate that there is guerilla warfare is not just prevalent in other countries but in every single urban center in this nation.
Americans love tragedy; but only if it has a happy ending.
wonderful painting!

I recognized it right away as a still of Marlon Brando as Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, from his monologue to Capt. Willard, i.e. you're an errand boy for grocery store clerks.
Via google images, here's an unrelated blog post that uses it and identifies it.

Thanks for the ID. One of these days I must get around to watching Apocalypse Now.

Emma...long time no read. But I have decided that because of western civilization's - god I love euphemisms - approach to life, death, relationships, it's very existence on this planet with limited resources, is in mass either schizoaffective or sociopathic or both.

I disagree that what Emma is complaining about is exclusive to the western media; not in the least. Keep in mind that's its the elite, highbrow non-western media that is offered on the net translated into English.
As far as political bread and circuses and morals scandals, if you go back to the 19th century, you can read all kinds of garbage in the newspapers that I'd say we haven't matched yet on the net, though we heading back in that direction.

A couple of examples:
The current headline story at the Nairobi Star:
And here's Allafrica.com's page on the big reality show in Africa, Big Brother Amplified, with what looks like about 50 links to coverage in newspapers allover the continent. I found the link to the page on Allafrica.com's home page, in a menu at the top with 6 other leading stories, titled Drama in The Big Brother House;

In other words, stories about people and things that are easy for most to cope with. Distractions, escapes, other people's problems.
I read through a few years of the local paper from the 1880s looking for an obit. The 'news' was very much like Twitter, mostly one or two sentences sharing local happenings. Great glimpse into a past world.
