    Peter Francis Stager Charged: Arkansas Man Accused of Beating D.C. Cop With Flagpole

    [....] The FBI received a tip that one of the individuals who assaulted the officer, whose name is given only as B.M., on the stairs of the U.S. Capitol building was Peter Francis Stager, the complaint says. The confidential information identified Stager from two videos posted on Twitter. One depicted him amongst a large group on the Capitol stairs, the complaint says. Online records say he has ties to Conway, Arkansas.

    That’s a city located not far from Little Rock. Online records link him to an inactive single-family home construction company. Multiple pro Trump rioters have been named and charged in connection with the riots; Stager’s political registration is listed as “optional.” He did not have any known social media accounts. Stager only comes up with a minor traffic case in Arkansas court records [....]

    Wednesday appear to show Mr. Mostofsky dressed in fur pelts and a bulletproof police vest, and holding a protective shield that belonged to the Capitol Police.

    Mr. Mostofsky’s father is Kings County Supreme Court Judge Shlomo Mostofsky.

    In a video taken inside the Capitol on Wednesday, Aaron Mostofsky told the New York Post: “We were cheated. I don’t think 75 million people voted for Trump — I think it was close to 85 million. I think certain states that have been red for a long time turned blue and were stolen, like New York.”

    He faces four federal charges, including illegal entry into a restricted area, disorderly conduct and theft of government property.

    no I didn't post it before, thank you, is a fascinating complication.

    actually people shouldn't worry if they are duping something. As long as it's relatively new item and they found it interesting, share it, why not?

    Just like to sort of limit it to who the people are, stories about them, what they look like, what they've stated  publicly and on social media, their arrests, what they did at the Capitol, what they did before, their personalties, beliefs, family friends what they may be up to, etc. Maybe how they behave in court as long as it doesn't get too deep into legal, that should go elsewhere

    (You know, the typical serial murderer true crime thing "but he was always just such a nice fellow, helped me shovel the walk!")

    Can I just say that lefties interested in reform of the criminal justice system, including many in the far left of the BLM movement, supported this type of thing strongly.

    Bail reform changes have been a real problem in NYC already as far as the crime rate.

    That former prosecutor Kamala Harris was tough about these kind of issues is one of the favorite reasons for far lefties to attack her.

    No worries, if these guys cause any trouble while out, we can just call the social workers?

    Let me take this opportunity to just warn ya that I will not be surprised if a few of the perps end up being far left Boogaloos anarchist types and this will renew the vigor of Laura Ingraham types to blame the whole thing on "the left" as she can then return to the classic spiel of "law and order Republicans." When in actuality, Liz Cheney is currently the head of the "law and order Republican" contingent. Trump IS an anarchist sympathizer, he did run for president intending to upend the GOP, but he did it only for personal attention; like Daisy & Tom Buchanan of Great Gatsy, it is not ideological.

    Suffice it to say that I think it really stupid of anyone to label any stormers as Republicans, even "right-wing" is not the smartest label. They consist of Trump cultists being agitated by anarchists of violent intent. JUST "ANARCHISTS" not "right-wing extremists", using the latter is falling into a political spin trap. ("Hang Pence" is just one slogan from that gang that is a reminder.) And the only thing one should make the Republican party responsible for is pandering to Trumpism and enabling him to continue with his anarchic rule, or it will backfire.

    Again, I will not be surprised if a few of agitators turn out to be left-wing anarchists, and the result will be stressing that they are all "antifa" and many on the right will buy in because of the cognitive dissonance about what Trump really was.

     The reality is that the true believing anarchists are both far left and far right and they liked going with Trump's memes because he was basically anarchic: everyone looking out for #1 is great with him. Back sliding only when he'd fall into line with Barr's recommendations to go "law and order Republican" vs. big-city blue government in DC or Portland.

    Extremism is the problem here. Anarchists are the problem.

    Labeling them as "Republicans" is like labeling Timothy McVeigh a Republican.

    Going to extremes does have a life of its own, whatever the reasons cited for doing so. Nonetheless, I oppose labeling all actors who go there as anarchist.

    If I were a white supremacist who wanted a polity that guaranteed my privilege based upon what I define as my race, "the anything goes" of anarchy is not an option. They are demanding that the instruments of state serve one group at the expense of others. That would require a lot of order to replace the existing one. Merely destroying the existing one is no guarantee of future results.

    If what is meant by "far left" refers to the Lenin project to introduce a new social order after entirely getting rid of the previous one, that too, is not anarchy but what Lenin called the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.

    I don't have any sympathy for anarchists but if I did, having to be seen as espousing one or another view of the ideal has to suck.

Let's get rid of all the authorities laws and politics and everyone will be free to be a de-escalating social worker.

    bingo. there's a reason that reward is so high, they need him, he's like a key to the puzzle of the true agitators and any planners as opposed to those who just prone to become a mob. It's a prosecution thing, otherwise they are just limited to the breaking and entering, vandalism and rioting charges and the like for most (except for those with clear evidence of attacking police). They can try higher charges, but they may fail without more evidence of conspiracy or motive. He could also be a key to congresspeople being prosecuted or not.

I’m overseeing our Federal agency’s response to the SolarWinds cyberespionage incident, and many of my colleagues are still fixated on the initial compromise, not the secondary and tertiary effects of the incident. And when they start asking questions about “who” and “how” they assume that information is easily knowable. They don’t recognize that there are layers to opsec, situational awareness, and intelligence gathering and analysis.

      If we learn anything from this, its that we need more critical and actively engaged people involved in physical and logical security who can see past the distractions and obvious.

    These people must be taught and a clear message must be sent that even if they (mistakenly?) believe a politician, even the president, told them to break the law it's not exculpatory. The arrests are the first step in the process but I'm not convinced that they won't just get a slap on the wrist in the end. We'll see.

    A man sent his girlfriend’s brother a selfie while storming the Capitol, officials say. The brother is a federal agent.

    When Thomas Fee got a text on Jan. 6 from his girlfriend’s brother asking if he was in Washington, he responded with a selfie inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda as dozens of others who had just stormed the building waved flags behind him, federal officials said.

    In one message, Fee wrote he was “at the tip of the spear,” according to a criminal complaint filed Saturday.

    But Fee’s girlfriend’s brother wasn’t asking out of simple curiosity — he is a special agent with the State Department. The agent, who isn’t identified in court documents, later turned the evidence over to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

    Fee, a recently retired New York firefighter with a history of racist complaints, surrendered in Queens on Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District told the New York Post. He is charged with unlawful entry of the Capitol and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds [.....]

    An employee with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allegedly participated in the D.C. insurrection. Kevin Strong is charged in a newly unsealed affidavit. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said he was already on their radar before the Jan. 6 raid on the Capitol Building.

    The feds said they began investigating Strong on Dec. 30 after a witness told authorities he had started acting differently. According to this account, Strong was stock-piling items, telling people to prepare for martial law, rioting, and protests. He was also big on the QAnon conspiracy theory, and thought World War 3 was going to start on January 6, 2021, authorities said.

    A man who helped drag a police officer down the U.S. Capitol steps tried to flee to Switzerland after the day of the siege and then, in what authorities called a different type of flight effort, attempted suicide, prosecutors told a judge on Friday.

    Describing the case as “very disturbing,” a federal magistrate denied bail to Jeffrey Patrick Sabol, a 51-year-old divorced geophysicist with three children. Patrick has not been charged with assault but rather under a civil disorder statute barring any effort to “obstruct, impede, or interfere” law enforcement.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew E. Krause called the allegations against Sabol “deeply troubling,” ultimately denying him bail following an hourlong hearing. Sabol’s defense counsel requested his home confinement secured by hundreds of thousands of dollars, but the judge was unpersuaded that the money or other set of conditions could hold him. [....]

    A New Jersey woman has been identified as yet another defendant in the D.C. insurrection. Rasha Abual-Ragheb was charged after she allegedly showed a person a picture of herself inside the Capitol Building.

     

    The defendant allegedly told investigators details of her life story, including that she fled the Lebanese Civil War as a child, went to the nation of Jordan, and then moved to the United States, where she has resided for 21 years. Now, Abual-Ragheb is a Donald Trump supporter who faces charges in connection with the Jan. 6 riot. The feds say she believed that a “civil war is coming.”

    “Just left Dc… I got tear gas, paper spray!!! But I was part of the history,” the defendant wrote in a Facebook post cited by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “We the people won’t take it anymore. Antifa were between us, i and other MAGA people told Dc police, get that Antifa they didn’t do anything. He had black metal chair… The police would order to use full force on us from the beginning when we start marching to the capital, the use teargas and pepper spray and rubber bullet, they shot the woman that was standing peacefully without a a weapon, they hit women’s kids.     A prominent activist in the Stop the Steal movement who spoke at a rally held by backers of President Donald Trump in Washington the day before the storming of the Capitol was arrested on Monday on charges that he took part in the riot.

    Brandon Straka, 44, was arrested on a felony charge of interfering with police during civil disorder. The self-described founder of a movement to “walk away” from liberalism was also charged with unlawful entry into a restricted building and disorderly conduct.

    An FBI agent’s affidavit used to obtain a criminal complaint against Straka describes his role as an organizer of Stop the Steal and quotes his comments at the Jan. 5 rally held at Freedom Plaza, but doesn’t indicate whether the government views those activities as context for his actions at the Capitol or part of the alleged crimes.

    FBI Special Agent Jeremy Desor said that videos revealed that during the melee, Straka was part of a crowd pushing toward a Capitol doorway. Desor doesn’t contend that Straka went into the building, but says that as others tried to charge through the entrance, the activist shouted: “Go! Go!”

    Desor said that as a Capitol police officer tried to make his way through the crowd with a riot shield over his head, Straka urged others to wrestle it from him.

    “Take it away from him,” Straka allegedly yelled. “Take it! Take it!”

    Straka achieved some prominence in the media during Trump’s effort to reverse President-elect Joe Biden’s win. Straka spoke at a variety of previous Stop the Steal events at the Capitol, in Michigan and elsewhere. According to the complaint, he said he was supposed to speak at such a rally at the Capitol on Jan. 6 but that event was scuttled after the riot broke out and police cleared the crowd.

    During his speech the day before the riot, Straka referred to the audience as “patriots” and referred repeatedly to a “revolution,” Desor said. Straka also told the attendees to “fight back” and added, “We are sending a message to the Democrats, we are not going away, you’ve got a problem!” the agent reported.

    In media appearances, Straka described himself as a Manhattan-based, gay ex-liberal. He and his “#walkaway” tagline became a favorite in some conservative quarters in the past couple of years, featured on programs such as the "Judge Jeanine" show on Fox News.

    Court records show the criminal complaint against Straka was approved by a federal magistrate judge in Washington last Tuesday.

    In the two weeks since he was jailed in the Capitol riot, Cowboys for Trump founder Couy Griffin has refused to take a COVID-19 test, or to appear at a virtual court hearing or confer with his lawyer, a federal judge wrote Friday.

    Griffin will continue to be held in isolation because he refused to take a COVID-19 test upon his admission to a D.C. jail, U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqui wrote Friday.

    “Simply taking a COVID-19 test, something hundreds of millions of people have safely done across the world, will allow the defendant to exit isolation,” the judge wrote in papers first reported by Buzz Feed.

    Griffin faces contempt charges if he refuses to appear at his next court appearance on Feb. 1, the judge wrote.

    OIC. You know, what really strikes home to me here is the concept that with law and order, crime and punishment, it really doesn't matter what you believe, it's how you behave! In the end, I don't and shouldn't care if he was a rightie extremist or an "antifa" agitator, just that he did what he did! 

     In the end, motive is only studied by law enforcement in order to either solve a crime or try to prevent one. Ideologies are only criminal if you commit a crime.

    We don't prosecute thought crimes in this country. You are allowed to hate as long as you don't act it out.

    People are considered to have individual agency and consciences.

    Neither thoughts nor tribal beliefs force people to commit crimes.

    In rare cases schizophrenics can get away with the insanity defense of "I was just following what the voices told me to do" but that's unusual. They are still mostly locked up because they can't control themselves and are a danger to society. because of that.

    That's why "I was just following orders" is not an excuse in a court.

    Your absurd level of partisanship and tribal hatred is showing, you like the "us vs. them" thing. Hopefully, you are not in any profession related to de-escalation or conflict management. You'd make a terrible social worker, cop, or soldier.

    and that is why I created this thread and posted news items on it a gazillion times and also have created a series of three blogs with a multitude of stories on them titled "Learning about Extremism" You on the other hand just rant against one particular tribe, where they are all evil, and to me a lot of what you post reads like: "I'm ISIS and my enemy is 'the west'". You're entitled to hate people as members of tribes as if they aren't individuals, and I'm entitled to dislike that and see it a major problem in this country.

    Ah yes, the cry of the unheard. Funny, that's exactly why many folks stormed the Capitol, I read that in article after article after article, they felt they were not being heard. They were so angry, they felt that justice was not being served, they just had to do something. It's so unfair that the FBI and DOJ is not being more tolerant about their anger.

    A Pennsylvania Mother’s Path to Insurrection

    How claims from Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones spurred a parent of eight to become one of the Capitol riot’s biggest mysteries and a fugitive from the F.B.I.

    Before the pandemic, Rachel Powell, a forty-year-old resident of a small town in western Pennsylvania, sold cheese and yogurt at local farmers’ markets and used Facebook mostly to discuss yoga, organic food, and her children’s baseball games. But, last year, Powell began to post more frequently, embracing more extreme political views. Her interests grew to include conspiracy theories about covid-19 and the results of the Presidential election, filtered through such figures as Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and the Infowars founder Alex Jones. On May 3, 2020, Powell wrote on Facebook, “One good thing about this whole CV crisis is that I suddenly feel very patriotic.” Expressing outrage at the restrictions that accompanied the pandemic, she wrote, “It isn’t to late to wake up, say no, and restore freedoms.” Several days later, she posted a distraught seven-minute video, shot outside a local gym that had been closed. “Police need to see there’s people that are citizens that are not afraid of you guys showing up in your masks. We’re going to be here banded together, and we’re not afraid of you,” she said. “Maybe they should be a little bit afraid.”

    On January 6th, during the storming of the United States Capitol, Powell made good on that threat. Videos show her, wearing a pink hat and sunglasses, using a battering ram to smash a window and a bullhorn to issue orders. “People should probably coördinate together if you’re going to take this building,” she called out, leaning through a shattered window and addressing a group of rioters already inside. “We got another window to break to make in-and-out easy.”

    In recent weeks, as journalists and law-enforcement officials tried to identify participants in the assault, she came to be known as “Bullhorn Lady” and “Pink Hat Lady.” She appeared on an F.B.I. “Wanted” poster, was featured in cable-television news segments, and became an obsessive focus of crowdsourced investigative efforts by laypeople and experts. Forrest Rogers, a German-American business consultant who is part of a Twitter group called the Deep State Dogs, recently identified Powell and reported her name to the F.B.I. She is now being sought by law enforcement.

    In her first public comments since the riot, Powell acknowledged her role in the events at the Capitol. During a two-hour telephone interview, she claimed that her conduct had been spontaneous, contrary to widespread speculation that she had acted in coördination with an organized group. “I was not part of a plot—organized, whatever,” Powell, who was speaking from an undisclosed location, told me. “I have no military background. . . . I’m a mom with eight kids. That’s it. I work. And I garden. And raise chickens. And sell cheese at a farmers’ market.” During the interview, she reviewed photographs and videos of the Bullhorn Lady, acknowledging that many of the images showed her, and offered detailed descriptions of the skirmishes they depicted. She declined to comment on some of her conduct—including smashing windows and shouting orders to fellow-rioters—that could carry criminal charges. “Listen, if somebody doesn’t help and direct people, then do more people die?” she said. “That’s all I’m going to say about that. I can’t say anymore. I need to talk to an attorney.”

    Powell was born in Anaheim, California, and grew up on what she described as “the really bad side” of Fresno [....]

    Powell said that, before the election of Donald Trump, in 2016, she held a wide range of political opinions. “My views kind of fall all over the place,” she said. “I guess you could say that I’m more libertarian at heart.” Though her county supported Trump by wide margins in both 2016 and 2020, Powell told me that she didn’t vote for him in his first run, and her social-media posts during that time include sharp criticism of him. “Trump makes me uncomfortable as a presidential candidate,” she wrote in a Facebook post that linked to a piece about Trump’s lack of civility. “What disturbs me is that so many people support this type of person.” She also told me that she took issue with his environmental policies. During his tenure in the White House, however, she embraced Trump and, eventually, the misinformation that he nurtured about the coronavirus and election fraud.

    Those political views began to have various impacts on her life after the pandemic hit. Paula Keswick, who co-owns a local creamery that sold Powell cheese and yogurt, said that Powell was barred from working at some events after she refused to obey pandemic restrictions. “She was just adamant she was not going to wear a mask,” Keswick said.     AwfuI and reminds me that I find the lack of reporting on the severity of the many police injuries (or not, as the case may be) is kind of odd, that we are only seeing more on it now-I guess privacy issues and then how the Capitol Police leadership being loathe to communicate much, for whatever reason? But I can't help thinking about how with other victims of violent events with this kind of media attention, there'd be a like a bunch of "Go Fund Me" accounts by now...the injuries are turning up in the indictments, the FBI and prosecutors know about them, that's for sure.

It's no longer a debate over opinions. It's reality over craziness. You can see it a bit on the left but it's more prominent and more pronounced on the right. So many people are quite literally insane

    A Marine veteran and retired New York Police Department officer is accused of beating and choking a D.C. officer in one of the most brutal of the hundreds of violent attacks on law enforcement during the siege at the U.S. Capitol last month.

    Thomas Webster, 54, displayed “pure rage” befitting a “junkyard dog,” a federal prosecutor said Tuesday during a hearing before a magistrate judge in White Plains, N.Y. Webster repeatedly hit a D.C. police officer with the metal rod of a Marine Corps flag, prosecutors allege. When he lost control of the metal pole, Webster tried to tear off the officer’s gas mask and choked him with the chin strap, according to court records.

    “We see what I would describe as a look of pure rage,” U.S. Attorney Benjamin Gianforti said in describing a video of the incident. “His teeth are gritted. This is a man about to unleash some kind of violence.”

    Webster’s first court appearance came as Steven A. Sund, who was chief of the Capitol Police during the Jan. 6 attack, testified to lawmakers that he had not seen an FBI report sent to the department warning of an extremist plan to storm the Capitol.

    Webster, who served two decades in the NYPD until his retirement in 2011, allegedly hurled expletives at the officer and accused him of being a communist — a rant against a fellow officer that the prosecutor noted in requesting that he be held without the chance for release on bond.

    Webster appeared to have no compassion for the officer he brutalized, Gianforti said: “Frankly, your honor, he goes after that cop like a junkyard dog . . . fists clenched.”

    Webster’s defense attorney James Monroe argued the man had never been arrested and wouldn’t flee while awaiting trial. He now owns a landscaping business.

    He’s never been in a shooting incident in his career,” the lawyer argued. “This was the one and only protest he’s ever been a part of.”

    He also said Webster was only reacting to being punched by a police officer. Gianforti said investigators had reviewed video showing Webster for the 10 minutes prior to the violent encounter and found no evidence of such provocation.

    “There’s just nothing in there to suggest Mr. Webster was struck by this officer or any other officer,” Gianforti said [.....]

    F.B.I. Said to Have Singled Out Potential Assailant in Capitol Officer’s Death

    The death of the officer, Brian Sicknick, after the Capitol riot has been a major focus for investigators scrutinizing the attack by a pro-Trump mob.

    WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. has pinpointed an assailant in its investigation into the death of Brian D. Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer who was injured while fending off the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol last month and later died, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the inquiry.

    The F.B.I. opened a homicide investigation into Officer Sicknick’s death soon after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Investigators initially struggled to determine what had happened as he fought assailants. They soon began to suspect his death was related to an irritant, like mace or bear spray, that he had inhaled during the riot. Both officers and rioters were armed with such irritants during the attack.

    In a significant breakthrough in the case, investigators have now pinpointed a person seen on video of the riot who attacked several officers with bear spray, including Officer Sicknick, according to the officials. And video evidence shows that the assailant discussed attacking officers with the bear spray beforehand, one of the officials said.

    While investigators narrowed potential suspects seen in video footage to a single person this week, they have yet to identify the assailant by name.

    A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.

    Given the evidence available to investigators, prosecutors could be more likely to bring charges of assaulting an officer, rather than murder, in the case. But the death of Officer Sicknick, a 42-year-old Air National Guard veteran who served in Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan, could increase the penalties that prosecutors could seek if they took such a case to court [.....]

    The Justice Department on Friday also indicted six members of the far-right nationalist group the Proud Boys with conspiracy to obstruct the certification of President Biden’s electoral victory and to attack law enforcement. The suspects, who had already been charged by criminal complaint, were also accused of threatening a federal officer and entering the Capitol carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon, including a wooden ax handle.

    Federal prosecutors said that Louis Enrique Colon of Missouri, Felicia and Cory Konold, a couple from Arizona, and William Chrestman, Christopher Kuehne and Ryan Ashlock of Kansas were part of a group of Proud Boys who traveled to Washington in order to “stop, delay, and hinder the congressional proceeding” on Jan. 6.

    They did so after Enrique Tarrio, the self-described national chairman of the Proud Boys, identified in the indictment as Person One, said on social media that members should “turn out in record numbers” and “spread across downtown DC in smaller teams.”

    The department said that the group coordinated their travel to Washington and stayed together in an Airbnb rental near the city. They brought and wore matching uniforms and carried [.....]
