A Pennsylvania woman accused of being one of the Capitol rioters told a former "romantic partner" she planned to steal a laptop computer from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office and sell it to Russian intelligence, court documents revealed Monday.
Riley June Williams was charged with disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds with the intent to disturb a session of Congress and other charges after her former flame turned her in.
William's ex, who was described in Special Agent Jonathan Lund's charging document as W 1 (witness one), called the FBI and told them she "intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service.”

I hadn't read emptywheel on it but even without them sorting it out now, I saw plenty of other stuff on this story that made it seem to have many bogus parts. My thoughts were: no need to spend a lot of time on this yet, let the Feds sort it out for a while, see if they take it seriously.

Emptywheel not special in this case - just someone who pays a lot of attention to news & knows to be a little reserved & careful - kind of like someone else I know.

The charging statement (by FBI special agent Jonathan Lund) is quite extensive; I recommend reading it.

to those who don't have the time to read the whole: agent Lund does not recommend charging her for stealing anything at this time . His "probable cause" list for recommended charges for breaking which laws are at the end of the statement at items 20 and 21. And the initial charges on the criminal complaint are only these two

Yeah, don't bias your case by overcharging at start of your goal is to hold them or quickly plea them through the system with some accountability. With all the rioters, they're not going to pursue every conceivable charge - that'd stop any other work for years.
The yuppie woman with private jet asking for a pardon for a misdemeanor and yacking to the camera cluelessly? (Texas realtor) Give her the max.

They have added theft of government property to the charges.

This doesn't sound like it went to Russia or anything like that, sounds more like that was just stupid immature youngin bullshitting. That said, does sound like they are going to prosecute as tough as they can manage for the deterrent message: just like smart people know not to joke about bombs in the TSA line. Furthermore sounds like it was a staff laptop in a conference with only "presentations" on it (probably used for Power Point slideshows?) so calling it "THE LAPTOP" is misleading braggadaccio:

Surely this story is shaping up to eventually become one of those NBC Keith Morrison Dateline crime mystery shows. There's always ex love interests involved and everybody is either lying for revenge or hoodwinked by the lying.
