The illiberal left is a lot less threatening than the right. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Oh, I disagree with that. The authoritarian right tends to be content telling people what they can and cannot do. The totalitarian left insists on telling people what they can and cannot think.

The core Republican base is controlled by hate and fear. What thinking they do, what lies they believe, what conspiracy theories they share only matters to Republicans as long it helps to keep Republicans in power.
It's why Trump can lie 20,000 times. Why he can go from 'the virus will disappear ', to '200,000 dead a very good job', or just say nonsense 'less tests mean less cases', and it doesn't matter. What matters on the right is that he hates the same people they hate.

As far as politics is concerned, though, Democratic candidates don't bother going after the core Republican base since Reagen. It's the 1/3 of the country they don't even bother trying to get. It's always the middle., after Reagan stole a lot of them.
And more and more of the middle are registering as Independents because of "pox on both your houses" of agitprop, and cancelling over various purity tests.
And one other thing: I know how much it angers you that we have so many stupid people in this country amounting to almost 1/3.
But they are citizens and the program is we are all supposed to be e pluribus unum. Somehow they have to be lived with.
This is why I always welcomed Flavius' input here, he knew and talked with and was friendly with conservatives on a personal bases.
I don't see the further stoking of this "lock em up", us vs. them, "they're all stoopid kool-aid" drinkers" thing working well so far.
I do see signficant potential in making everything-he-touches-dies Trump a common-good enemy though. There's not been an example in my lifetime of so many Republicans and former Republicans working to elect a Democrat president. A reminder that Geo. W. Bush has endorsed Biden.
Don't look gift horses in the mouth and stop stoking differences, is what I think.

Yeah I have been seeing all kinds of commentary in the circle in which he is included on Twitter, along the lines of wondering what's next.
