It's not clear what the practical consequence of this will be in terms of security, but it's a major symbolic victory for Obama.
by Michael Wolraich on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:03pm
Nearly as politically advantages to Obama as the hostage release was to Reagan. Not that I'm saying it was done for the same purpose.

Of course Obama would not grand stand on a carrier within sight of San Diego for this announcement, BUT THIS IS A BLATANT PARTISAN ATTACK ON THE GOP!.... how else could it be interpreted, by Republicans anyway?
by NCD on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 1:10am
That's disgusting.
by kyle flynn on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:18pm
It's a major victory for all of us. Amen.
by Bruce Levine on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:20pm
We won!!! Now bring the troops home!
by NCD on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:07pm
WELL PUT!
Genghis notes this is the 8 year anniversary of W Bush declaring victory!
by Richard Day on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:12pm
Awwww man. That just totally ruined the moment for me. What are the odds?
We live in a warped world. Glad he's dead - long live the new enemy.
by kgb999 on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:50pm
According to the reports from CBS, he was killed in Pakistan. Which begs the question. We he killed by our troupes of the Pakistan Army or Security force or who ?
by cmaukonen on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:14pm
And they broke into "Celebrity Apprentice" before they announced who was going to be fired. Icing on the cake!
by Ramona on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:15pm
hahahahahah
Trump will demand to see the death certificate! hahahaha
by Richard Day on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:18pm
OK. That's the funniest observation yet.
Why, exactly, is everyone focusing on Trump though?
by kgb999 on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:59pm
Puts a new light on our Afghanistan policy.
by Rootman on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:19pm
Yup. Should have invaded Pakistan.
Missed it by thaaaaaaaaaaat much.

Munchkins
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
And she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead.
by cmaukonen on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:43pm
Whew; waited until the Royal Wedding was over to announce it...
by we are stardust on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:48pm
HAHAHAAH
I think our President had other considerations in mind--took a week to work out the odd ends attached to this big news.
People are just descending upon the WH and cheering and singing and hugging and waving flags and...
Fox News actually liked the President's speech!
That should last about five or six hours.
by Richard Day on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:53pm
In retrospect that makes some sense. Parts of it rubbed me wrong - especially when he went down the exceptionalism "just goes to show Americans can accomplish anything" road. I mean damn. Ten years and two shattered nations later ... just resolve, give thanks and wrap - no need to push it. But that *IS* the shit Fox gobbles up like candy ... so I guess my annoyance was their pleasure (the fuckers really didn't deserve it).
by kgb999 on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:12am
And specifically, transparently, timed to drown out tomorrow's Communist takeover of Canada.
Damm those evil news-cycle gnomes!!
by Obey on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:54pm
hahahahahaha
We got our Ford trucks and deer rifles all waiting at the border!
by Richard Day on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:00am
And Thank God Lenin that we have our commie sleeper cells in Minnesota ready to spread the revolution, eh, Dick? eh?
*wink wink nudge nudge*
by Obey on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:05am
Obey; small gift at Posterous. Ta make ya laugh! 2 minutes. Er...mine.
by we are stardust on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:10am
Ha. Nice title.Thanks.
I'm wondering if that's the meme Fox will be going with... He did it JUST to interrupt the Mighty Donald.
by Obey on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:19am
Pretty funny read. You'll enjoy it. G' Night.
by we are stardust on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:21am
Don't jinx things Obey. Our Canadian contingent is on a roll this week.
by Bruce Levine on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:00am
Dammit, you're right.
*knock on plasma*

Don't jinx things Obey. Our Canadian contingent is on a roll this week.
by Bruce Levine on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:01am
Well, jeez; I forgot that! Tomorrow Gadaffi? Tuesday ?
by we are stardust on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:02am
One of the NBC talking heads suggested that this event could prove a turning point in U.S. international relations which enables us to move beyond the war on terror. I would call it a potential pivot point. Timed with the collapse of despotic allies in the middle east and imminent military withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama could use it to refocus American foreign policy on new objectives.
by Michael Wolraich on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:51pm
Let's hope.
by kyle flynn on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:54pm
Saw same discussion. No way to minimize this event. Hell, four months and we reach the decade of this goddamn war on terror!
The timing is strange. What is Khaddafi thinking right now?
What are the other Mideast emirs and leaders thinking right now?
by Richard Day on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:56pm
Amen.
No one can call him soft on terror now. So he's finally free to do the smart thing.
by Doctor Cleveland on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:18am
Yup. Opportunities don't come much better than this.
Only immediate negative is that the Pakistan thing is gonna stink. As in, they helped the US (riiiiiight), but then the US came onto Pakistani soil? Not just with drones overhead but with choppers and troops and firefights and taking the body away?
Still. As you say, the ducks are lined up to do some good things. Here's hoping.
by quinn esq on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 1:28am
And not to forget, Genghis, the collapse of a despotic ally just to your north as well.
by acanuck on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 6:48pm
I was just thinking that now would be a great time to smack around some socialists.
by Michael Wolraich on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 8:41pm
Wow.
by Doctor Cleveland on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:51pm
Wolf Blitzer just interviewed a New York City firefighter.
by Bruce Levine on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 11:58pm
As big a deal as this is, I thought the speech was underwhelming.
by Rootman on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:12am
Agreed. I mentioned upthread parts of it even rubbed me wrong. I'd like to watch it again before setting a final impression.
by kgb999 on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:19am
Now they are saying the order to attack was given by the President on Friday...
When they said 'last week' I thought that surely this took place at least a week ago.
I took a look at the video for last nite again, and he did say:
Wow what a week!
by Richard Day on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:21am
The India Times is reporting a son of bin Laden may have also been killed, does that mean some will get queasy on this??
by NCD on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 1:14am
MSNBC AND FOX were saying the same thing.
Then I get confused because we (Nato) took out a son of Khadaffi or Gaddafi or Cachooo in other actions this weekend.
Of course these crazed leaders all have fifteen wives and twenty concubines and scores of kids.
I see nobody getting queasy about any of this.
I have been queasy for eight damn years; let us end these wars tomorrow!
