CNN is covering nothing else right now.
Yet, there was virtually no national coverage of the shooting that took place in the huge Roundy's supermarket warehouse in Oconomowoc, WI on St. Patrick's Day. The warehouse was filled with workers that are Union brothers. The shooting dominated the news in southern Wisconsin. (Even though there are tons of other shootings going on in the greater Milwaukee area all the time--the habit of people who live further away about those is to shake their heads and stay away from Milwaukee.)
Turned that a (black) union worker who was a janitor shot and killed two (white) union workers and then later shot himself after pursuit. The shooter, Fraron Cornelius lived in Wauwatosa, which is not the inner city "hood" but a middle class and upper middle class "burb" within greater Milwaukee, and mostly white. They still haven't reported the motive nor revealed much of what happened. I bet Facebook groups in the area have lots of "reporting" on it, though, and I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of that might be about race, even if that was not involved in the motive.
At the same time, the Atlanta massage parlor shootings were dominating the national news and anti-Asian-American story. No attention to southern Wisconsin. Milwaukee area people probably look at all of that with a real skeptical eye about how in "flyover" their troubles are ignored and the coasts and their media are like on another planet.

A reminder of other recent mass shootings from the Crime News thread (besides Atlanta massage parlors shooting of 8, which has its own link that I edited into the post at top)
ALSO, there was massive panic about a possible shooter at Galleria mall in Houston March 20, as per videos of people running in fear and messages from the mayor and police that there was in fact, no shooter
edit to add: 636 people died yesterday in the U.S. from Covid. Total U.S. Covid deaths to date: 555,945

I met black Trump supporters in Oakland that had pretty clear reasons why they supported him. He did better than conservative Republicans ever did with black men. I'd say that black men shooting people in a mass outburst is a similar phenomenon to white men doing it or Muslim men doing it or even southeast Asian women doing it and they're likely doing it for the same reasons, as opposed to simply against one another (although that also occurs) or within themselves (which also occurs). Media isn't prepared to go there, so it will just leave such events alone since the narrative isn't as clear.
Barack Obama did talk about the appeal of Trump to some black voters.
by Orion on Mon, 03/22/2021 - 11:40pm
BUT BUT BUT Orion, we wanna talk about Asian-American hate crimes being an instrument of white supremacy...and if the police were abolished, it would all stop...or something...anything except violence expressed with guns...or Covid for that matter, we don't wanna think about that...we wanna protest and/or party in the streets
Edit to add: Here you go, proof whiteness is doing it:
funny it's not happening in Australia, they are mostly white (and Asian heritage as well!) too....founded by the worst of the worse dregs of colonialist empire, yet...

I remember being terrified of mass shootings during the Obama years. I really hope we're not returning down that path. Yikes.
by Orion on Tue, 03/23/2021 - 12:15am
Uh, we returned down that path (or it got worse, if you look at the records the past year). We just don't talk about it the same way.

the Boulder police just finished their press conference. they said very little, only that the public danger is over and a police office was killed. they would not give a number of fatalities at this time, would only use the word "multiple."
by artappraiser on Mon, 03/22/2021 - 8:57pm
They just finished another press conference, that comes from them, it included the police chief, district attorney, and the U.S. attorney. They name the police officer and will put him up on their site. It was confirmed that the bleeding man without a shirt lead away in videos is the suspect in custody, he is being treated in a hospital.

the AR-15 in the U.S. and Australia:

Haven't had another mass shooting like it since [in Australia]. That is an amazingly insightful comment, almost poetic in its simple elucidation that cuts to the core of the problem. It shows how paying attention to facts and selectively applying a bit of historical knowledge can reveal the simple essence of a solution to even the biggest and most complex problems. Thank god for tweets. I would extend an example of Parr's reasoning to note that we no longer have B-29 bombers and there have been no more atomic bombs dropped on Japanese cities since. and no bombs of any kind dropped by the U.S from a B-29 Superfortress on cities anywhere since they were all taken out of service in 1960.

Boulder was always "Happy Land", Tibet Jr. (Nairopa Institute), half Uni, half ski training. Like the least confrontational place in the world.

There is this large university there. What it needed has been an issue for decades with its own and adjacent counties.

Yes, i was going to do a grad program there until a professor told me "linguistics has nothing to do with liking languages". So I went to Europe instead. Good move, but i still think he was an idiot.

That was an idiotic remark.
You need to try more than one hot tub to get a balanced view.

It's gonna be interesting watching The Woke spin this one, they were expecting to do the white supremacy thing here and now they got an insane Syrian refugee instead. (And to top it off, Trumpian wingers already have been practicing for this one for quite some time: this is what you get when you open the floodgates to Ay-rabs. I wouldn't be surprised if QAnon already found "evidence" that he was among the crowds over there as a child jumping up and down and celebrating when they saw the WTC towers fall.)

The Woke will likely call for bans on assault rifles
The wingnuts will say guns are not the problem.
by rmrd0000 on Tue, 03/23/2021 - 9:18pm
Really?!
Curious about who they plan on using to enforce those new bans on people who already own them while police are slowly being eliminated. Jackbooted social workers from a new de-colonized ATF? Feds are evil doncha know.
by artappraiser on Wed, 03/24/2021 - 3:26am
you realize that "abolish police" friends of The Woke are the ones responsible for a lot of new gun sales and a shortage of ammunition this summer, right?

You are stuck in a "send social workers to gunfights" bubble
by rmrd0000 on Wed, 03/24/2021 - 9:15am
Uh, she's making fun of sending social workers to a gunfight - that's not quite being in that bubble.
But some bubbles do pop.
by PeraclesPlease on Wed, 03/24/2021 - 12:48pm
Rmrd, you are like a major poster boy for living in and representing a racist bubble and any smart longtime reader of your comments can see it. It's clear as a bell from most of what you write here how racist and how much in a bubble you are.
Don't fool yourself that others don't see that. To the point where I for one suspect you have never shared the slightest hint of your location in the country, nor do you ever mention traveling anywhere, because it would further expose how much in a bubble you are in your meatspace life. There is no need to hide a lot of that because you are using a pseudonym, but you nonetheless guard this info. like a hawk, that sends a strong message in itself that you don't get out of a little tribe much.

p.s. interestingly just heard a professional profiler on CNN label him as an "injustice collector", a category I had not heard before. He was arguing that with these types who collect anger and resentment over years to fit their narrative and then act out with cool careful planning, not in momentary rage, against the injustice narrative. That you have to somehow try to regulate their behavior, that weapons regulations don't cut it, because they will use what they can, i.e. bombings if they can't get AR-15's. (Made me think of Ted Kaczynski sitting in the wilderness seething about the world not seeing things his way, while at the same sending out mail bombs carefully made and planned out to get attention.)
