It seems very likely that Morales was on a quest for personal power and was moving toward becoming a left wing dictator. His own people told him to step down when they voted against changing the constitution to allow him to run. It was the opposition that saved democracy in the country by removing him from office, taking power then holding elections and giving up power when they lost the election.
