Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday signed a bill that gets rid of the state song “Maryland, My Maryland” — an ode that glorifies the Confederacy, refers to Abraham Lincoln as a “tyrant,” and urges the state to secede from the Union to fight the “Northern scum.”
Comments
Unsuccessful efforts to revise the lyrics to the song or to repeal or replace the song altogether were attempted by members of the Maryland General Assembly in 1974, 1980, 1984, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2016, 2018, and 2019.
Only took a hundred and fifty years. First attempt a century after the end of "the events of 1861-1865."
WOKE CANCEL CULTURE DESTROYING OUR SACRED HERITAGE!

It's all the fault of Nikole and the 1619 Project.

Never heard of it. I guess it must've been important to someone if they resisted so much...

I would think most people don't know their "state song" amirite? They might know the state motto if it's on their license plate. Sounds like an easy sop to old south right wing sympathizer voters without anyone else noticing it, if even they did.
PERFECT example of culture warring to no reasonable effect. Who really cares? Apparently rmrd and NCD have been paying attention, but like you, I never heard of it and I did a quick search on Twitter and I did not find any indication of anyone caring that this happened on either "side" of the divide.
Something like a flag or a license plate would be a different matter, as everyone would see it all the time.

I've lived in so many states, and AFAIK don't know the state song or bird or flower or whatever for any except a few obvious and repeated state mottos. California's the Golden Bear state, but what else?.

one reason "woke cancel culture" is often ridiculed, especially on state history matters, NCD, is that they often even know less shit than politicians about the history and do stuff like this, tear down statues honoring abolitionists who died fighting slavery

edit to add: if he was an old timey dude, they don't really care what he did, must have been bad in some way, they want to start allover with year zero, they know better how to run the world, the past was all colonial and fucked it up (Khmer Rouge style)

Comical
People don't care
Then think that it is important enough to tell us that they don't care.

I posted a piece that explained why minority interests often get their way, e.g. why the few with peanut allergies prevailed over the majority without to have peanuts banned on planes, because those with allergies care much more and it makes a life threatening difference, while the rest don't really care that much, so the few who care for whatever reason can get these changes. But no, most people don't care about the Maryland lyrics, nor do they care about the slave rebellion references to the 3rd verse of our national anthem that's sung at so many sports events, mostly because they don't even realize there's more than one, and if they do, they still likely don't care.

You posted it like it's a news item of import. I felt like spending time on saying why it's not. That's all it is, but I think that's important BECAUSE I believe a major part of the problem in our society is being distracted by culture wars issues that matter little AND I think politicians do that ON PURPOSE to distract peope with circuses that don't matter while they do things that do matter and no one is looking at that, i.e., arguing about Dr. Seuss or state songs as if it were a life/death matter, get people all het up and interested in that, while they work on things like making it harder to vote, gerrymandering, making sure taxes are lowered on the rich and Israel gets the weapons it wants....

P.S. GET REAL. Is anyone going to vote for Gov. Hogan because he signed this change? I mean really, what's on HBO is bigger news, culture-wars wise. This changes NOTHING real except a song nobody sings. IT'S A PURPOSEFUL distraction for idiots.

The "distraction" so cynically used in 1974, 1980, 1984, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2016, 2018, and 2019 IS NO MORE!
VICTORY for facing the issues of the 21st century! Like how the Republican Lie Machine can game the next election!
"The feeling" by The Trump Cult GOP Base that Biden stole the election and WHADDA WE GONNA DO BOUT drop boxes, election clerks who Don't Let Conspiracy Theorist right wing nuts yell in their faces, or givin folks on line COMMIE water.to make them vote Socialism!
Then regulate trans bathroom use, expand laws protecting guns, 100 round magazines, AR-15s and the unborn.

For the corrupt right wing lie machine, no facts, no "events", no policy, no blatant hypocrisy, no lie, no law, norm, institution or oath has any significance unless it aids them in winning the next election, or better yet, ends elections entirely, with them holding unassailable power
