    REAGAN DEMENTIA

               Manwholaughs.jpg
THE 40TH PRESIDENT OF THE USA

Several years ago I watched a comedian on the Comedy Channel describe Ronald Reagan thusly:

Ronald Reagan had as much to do with the Reagan Administration as a hood ornament on a 1956 Buick had with driving its owner to work.

I am surprised when old issues come to the fore that I thought had been resolved years ago.
Maybe that is why I become so enraged to see political movements that wish to include the teaching of ancient myths as reality in our primary and secondary schools.

I mean the earth is not a mere 6,000 years old, President Jackson was one of the most cruel and inhumane animals who ever sat in the Oval Office and Cal Coolidge brought this nation to the precipice of annihilation by capitalist robber barons.

I mean to me that is settled history, and should be included in all public school texts.
    But nowadays, nothing is settled.

We are forced to reargue scientific findings going back five hundred years.

We are forced to reargue what most level headed folks came to assume after properly analyzing the data and documents available.

Now I always despised Ronald Reagan. But I have to admit that at times he was hilarious even if he had no intent to be hilarious, like when he chastised the University of California for allowing rock bands to play in one of its gymnasiums in 1966 as he sparked off his campaign for governor:

Ronnie Rayguns was against everything I was for in 1966 whether the issue was Civil Rights or welfare or ‘socialized medicine’ or free speech. So my view of this idiot is colored by biases that I have held for fifty years.

But there is a non-political opinion that I have held with regard to this man during his two terms in office.

It was clear to me that by age 70, a couple of weeks following his inaugural address, Ronald Reagan was short more than a few cards of a full mental deck.

I listen to Matthews marvel about this President’s ability to bring the country together with his marvelous presence, his marvelous speeches, his marvelous stature and frankly I have no fucking idea what he is talking about.

CBS reporter Lesley Stahl may be able to settle the family feud that has erupted between President Ronald Reagan’s two sons over an important historical issue: Did the 40th president have Alzheimer’s disease when he was in the White House?

In a new memoir, his son Ron suggests that Reagan suffered from the beginning stages of this disease while he was commander in chief, pointing out that his father became “lost and bewildered” during the 1984 presidential debates with Democratic nominee Walter Mondale and that in 1986 Reagan could not remember the names of familiar landmarks.

But Ron defends his father, who was not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s until 2004, and his aides: “I’ve seen no evidence that my father (or anyone else) was aware of his medical condition while he was in office. Had the diagnosis been made in, say 1987, would he have stepped down? I believe he would have.

Now to be fair, Reagan was shot down by some wacko in 1981 and it certainly did him no good. He almost died and I am sure that had a lasting affect upon his cognitive abilities.

But by that time, he could not get out an entire sentence without stumbling while reading his provided text.

Leslie Stahl visted the Oval Office in order to receive some meaningless award from the President and was ordered not to ask one goddamn question during this informal presentation. Fine, she thought, I will get my medal.

As she was led into the sacred chamber, the President of the United States looked like he was in some absent mental state.Reagan was as shriveled as a kumquat. He was so frail, his skin so paper-thin. I could almost see the sunlight through the back of his withered neck…His eyes were coated. Larry introduced us, but he had to shout. Had Reagan turned off his hearing aid?

…Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was. He gave me a distant look with those milky eyes and shook my hand weakly. Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought. I have to go out on the lawn tonight and tell my countrymen that the president of the United States is a doddering space cadet. My heart began to hammer with the import…I was aware of the delicacy with which I would have to write my script. But I was quite sure of my diagnosis

Certainly by 1985 Reagan was not running this country any more than that hood ornament was driving the ’56 Buick. And Michael Moore underlines this point in his movie Capitalism:
Speed it up says Donald Regan

Donald Thomas Regan (pronounced /ˈriːɡən/; December 21, 1918 – June 10, 2003) was the 66th United States Secretary of the Treasury, from 1981 to 1985, and Chief of Staff from 1985 to 1987 in the Ronald Reagan Administration, where he advocated “Reaganomics” and tax cuts to create jobs and stimulate production. Regan was criticized for his Prime Ministerial style of working, for his involvement in the Iran-Contra Affair, and for his frequent disagreements with Ronald Reagan’s wife, First Lady Nancy Reagan.

I maintain that by ’83 Reagan was lost to dementia. But the American People reelected this poor victim just like they reelected the most corrupt Administration in 100 years in November of 2004.
Now I do not really blame Stahl even though I have always despised her. Leslie is a vain and pompous self engrandizing journalistic whore. But are not most journalists whores in the end anyway. In the context of her meeting with Reagan, what could she have written? Where were her witnesses? Where was her degree in Psychiatry?

Reagan, in his more sane days, was a capitalist who wished to undue all of the measures taken during the Administration of FDR, all of the Civil Rights Legislation of the 60′s and all of the provisions of the War on Poverty.

I despise the man and his legacy.

But Ronnie does demonstrate an important symbol in the governmental affairs of this country.
You can have a brain dead person who nominally is in charge of the most powerful Executive Office in the world and the corporate robber barons will end up running everything. Nothing will be left to chance!!

And the American Electorate will abide anything.

    Comments

I met Ronald Reagan once. He even shook my hand. It was 1972. I was a senior in college in Oklahoma.  I was an actor and was performing in a play. Reagan was there to speak before the Young Republicans club.  In 1972, most of the students, even in small Oklahoma colleges, were hippies and hated everything Reagan and the Republicans stood for.  Reagan came backstage after the show wearing such an orange tan I can only assume he left it in his will to the current Speaker of the House.  I had been previously warned by the head of the Drama Dept. that I had to mind my manners and 'play nice'... so I repressed my impulse to confront him with some hippie anti-war slogans and just smiled benignly and shook his hand. Mr. Reagan gave me the phoniest of smiles and half-distracted, uttered something meaningless, then glad-handed me and quickly worked his way through the rest of the cast and was gone.

I always contrast that meeting with one I had about five years later. (I think I may have told you this story before, DD, but I'll repeat it anyway.) I was working as a page at NBC in New York and was in the hallway when Hubert Humphrey arrived for an appearance on the Tomorrow Show.  He was no longer a national candidate, but he went down the hall, shaking everyone's hand, from the network V.P.s to the cue-card guy and the cable-pullers.  He looked each person in the eyes, and told them he was glad to meet them. And even though I had seen him do that all the way down the hall, when he got to me, and looked me in the eyes and told me he was glad to meet me, I believed him and felt he truly cared about how I was doing.  Oh sure, it was probably just a politician's trick; something a skilled pol learns to do by rote, but to me, the contrast in how these two men treated people couldn't have been greater.

Jesus Smith, I just posted this with three or four edits. hahahahaha

Hubert is my hero, Hubert has always been my hero and I thought Bobby was one mean son of a bitch at the time although now he is one of my heroes. ha

Then it was Eugene who took him on.

Hubert fought harder for the working men and women of this country than any other guy in this country.

You sir, were privileged to see a genuine fighter for America, not some actor....

Great story, just a wonderful story. You shook hands with a great man and a kumquat. hahahaha

    And you knew it!!! hahaahahah

    Reagan’s Demons

How Occult worship, controlled a Nation.

Those who are familiar with the occult, know of its affiliation with demons… The things the demons are noted for, is they always control, for their own depravity.

Relying on demons to help run the country?

    http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x236438

The occult worship, helped mask over his lack of judgment.

In the video, notice how Nancy his wife, could deflect his apparent loss of abilities.

“No, No, don’t do that” Then Ronald laughs it off,  he doesn’t argue with Nancy, except she wouldn’t argue with demons, because the demons controlled her and the country

    Zombie? Controlled by Demons?

You can have a brain dead person who nominally is in charge of the most powerful Executive Office in the world and the corporate robber barons will end up running everything

The study of, and entertainment industry are promoting it heavily to this day, I’ts not a good thing this occult genre, and it’s influencing our children today.

Keep an eye out for more depravity.

Oh I am back reading my Jaynes materials again Resistance.

There are people who hear voices.

Oh did you know that certain mentally ill people who are deaf see visions instead?

    This is nuts.

And these idiots called themselves Christians.

This is all inconceivable to me but thank you for the link. Great link!!!

And the powerful minds like Donald Regan controlled it all.

Oh his majesty is now consulting astrologists.

I can just hear them all planning.

    NUTS!!

I look forward to what you'll share with us from Jaynes

So interesting, DD, though I'm not sure I completely agree about Lesley Stahl.  I can't bear to watch her, but she's smart and knows how to ask questions.

But I was watching AM Joe this morning and they were talking about different presidents and how they approached their SOTU.  Clinton and Obama were deep into it, refining and revising and stewing about it until the very last minute.  Reagan, on the other hand, according to Buchanan, was telling jokes a minute and a half before the speech.  (And why not?  He was an actor.  All he had to do was read his lines.)

But what really struck me was Buchanan's "hilarious" story about Reagan preparing for an important summit.  He staff gave him stacks of papers to read the night before so that he would be prepared the next day.  The next morning they asked him if he'd had a chance to read them all and he said he hadn't read any of it.  The Sound of Music was on and he watched it, instead.

The Joe panel got a good laugh over it, but I was stunned.  Not that I wouldn't have expected it, but to hear it like that.  Reagan was a genial puppet who had no interest in the presidency other than being the president.  George W. Bush did the same.  Whatever you might say about Clinton or Obama, you can't say that either one of them thought so little of their jobs it was enough to just get out there and mouth somebody else's words in a way that would seem presidential..

    The Sound of Music.

There is a metaphor waiting out there, but I do not have the energy after being off line all day.

George did the same, yes he did.

Barry just finished his and I thought it was great!

"But are not most journalists whores in the end anyway. In the context of her meeting with Reagan, what could she have written? Where were her witnesses? Where was her degree in Psychiatry?"

Wouldn't have stopped Mencken.  Though this is an interesting question -- would a non specialist be able to credibly claim that the President was out to lunch?  Certainly Reagan's supporters would attack the accuser on the very grounds of credentials.  But I suspect that enough people in the country believed, deep down, that Reagan had lost control of his government.  Maybe a firm statement of that fact would have been enough.

It is am amazing cover-up though, made even more amazing by the fact that it continues thirty years later.  I also don't get it when people like Matthews and, frankly, everyone, evokes the "great communicator" theme.  Whenever I see footage of Reagan in action he seems hokey and even sloppy and, yes, dumb while other things from the 80s still seem strikingly modern, even if there's a little more teal blue and hot pink than we're used to today.

Are we just sharing the collective delusion that we didn't actually hand over the reigns of the entire country to a demented front man and an unaccountable shadow government at a time when the world nearly destroyed itself and every human on it?

Phil Hartman as Reagan on SNL.  Turning everyone's perceptions of Reagan on its head.

Great minds think alike (if you note my timestamp below--you must have posted a second before I did)--and no Alzheimer's worries--it appears we both remember every damn good comedy skit we ever saw.  Laughing

Love that sketch.  Miss Phil Hartman.

GMTA. LOL  And yes, I never forget a great comedy routine.

Oh Smith, this is one of my favorite skits of all time.

The only thing funnier was watching poor Reagan get examined at the hearing on the Iran/Contra matters. ha!!

Ah, yes, the 80s...just like today except with big hair and shoulder pads.

In search of photo, I discovered http://www.thegreat80s.com/

Not sure about the 80s but the website is kind of great.

I heart ya, Emma Zahn.  I totally heart ya.

    Those weren't Joan Collins' shoulders?

hahhahaah. Mencken would never have shut up. Christ he would have lost it listening to those immortal words:

    Theeeeeeeeeeere ya go again!!

This is my favorite Ronald Reagan quote (he was responding to a question about why people trusted him so much).  He responded thusly:

The secret is SINCERITY.  If you can fake that, you've got it made.

I've heard that attributed to WC Fields and Groucho Marx, but I think Draco said it first.

Well, I would not be surprised if he "appropriated it."  Anyhow it's a great quote and suits him to a t!

In Morris' defense (or in Ron's), it might have been really hard to tell dementia from Reagan's regular mental state.

Good line Atheist even if you are not verified.hahahaha

Yeah I tried to kind of get to that point in this post. I mean we were supposed to be as afeard of gym bands as commies. ha

    THE BOREASS FOR BORAX

That is what we used to call him.

There is someone I have met in the past who was on AF1 and what he's hinted at is a perfect match for what Leslie Stahl observed. He said he wished he could have had a moive camera...like the one's on our cellphones today.. just to record what he witnessed simply because no one would believe him. Unfortunately, he and others were force to sign a document that anything they heard or saw was clasified at the highest level and they would never be authorized to speak to anyone. One interesting tidbit I figured out was everytime he looked as Leslie Stahl described, once he was pushed out in front of the public, the actor emerged. Makes one wonder if he was the President or acting the part.

    Edit Update:

The MotherJones article has an interesting statement...

Indeed, in her book—published 14 years after she left the White House beat—Stahl noted that after Reagan had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she asked one of his chief advisers if Reagan had been senile when he was president. "Maybe there were symptoms," this aide told her, "though I say that in hindsight. He would come to life for the cameras. He was on/off, on/off."

There's more to the story that has yet seen the light of day. The article is too similar to what I've heard from another source not related to the news.

Thanks for this Dd... the whole Reagan worship thing has gotten out of hand.... guess that's what Bush is waiting for... the rewriting of history to make him look good.

Speaking of how we 'elected' these guys... I am so curious about what is true about our elections and how much corruption is going on inside the process... I remember Jimmy Carter making a comment about our election system being corrupt even compared to some of the other countries he was helping hold elections for the first time.

guess that's what Bush is waiting for... the rewriting of history to make him look good.

Of course, with Reagan the rewriting was synchronous with his term in office - no waiting required. I think eventually history will correct at least some of the Reagan myths, whereas Bush will never look any better than he already does.

Nixon was able to use his Presidential Library to keep up a faux front until his death and the National Archives took it over. They cleaned up the place. Seems Nixon used the place to exonerate himself of any wrong doings.

Nixon himself just didn't get it.

Holding his fingers in the air" I'm not a crook"

He could never fess up, he got caught in his coverup and lies.

Putin shoved that thought right down the throat of George W when he attacked the 'lack of free elections' in Russia.

But how can you have fair elections when animals like Rove are free to make a joke of the entire system?

Hmmmmmm, the mental capacity of recent Presidents.

    1. Nixon at the end.

    2. Ford, any day of the week.

    3. Reagan.

    4. Bush.

And then people say Palin could never be elected.

Almost makes me want to learn more about Canada's politics so I can mock their leaders, too. Almost.

I'd be happy to help. The functional difference is that in a Parliamentary system, you can/must swap out an old leader much easier. But just to contribute:

    1. Brian Mulroney was a certified crook, taking brown bags full of money from foreign aerospace manufactures and slimy German bagmen. Canada's most hated PM, ever. Yet avoided prison.

    2. John Turner. A Rhodes, booze turned his brain to cheese. Used to be sent to his family cottage regularly to be dried out. Couldn't give a coherent speech, or even answer, by the end.

    3. Stephen Harper. Evil soulless undead piece of shit. Don't believe me?

    Check this out.

    4. Jean Chretien. Just look up the "Shawinigan Handshake" in Wiki sometime.

    5. WLMacKenzie King. Ruled for more years than any other man - 21. No friends, never married. Five university degrees (real ones.) Held seances, and spoke to the dead. Regularly. While in office. From Wiki: Privately, he was highly eccentric with his preference for communing with spirits, including those of Leonardo da VinciSir Wilfrid Laurier, his dead mother, and several of his Irish Terrier dogs, all named Pat except one named Bob.

However. Still regarded as the country's greatest PM.

Sufficient material for mockery? If not, please scroll upward and review that picture of our PRESENT Prime Minister. Dear God, save us.

Please tell me that's a product of Photoshop. Please.

Although I suppose that's no worse than this:

    hahahahahahaha

    Best line of the day!!

As you can tell I was kind of into Chevies--Buicks to be specific. hahahah

Reagan and Challenger - how the launch was a GO even though the temperature was below engineering safety levels, so that Ronnie could talk with the astronauts and particularly Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, in his SOTU speech the same day in the evening. The 1986 SOTU was rescheduled after the Challenger exploded.

Ronnie's administration went on to obfuscate the issue. Ronnie went on to National Sainthood.

GOP show biz and spin met the hard reality of science in a mere 73 seconds and seven astronauts paid with their lives.

    challenger explodes

Yeah and how much sympathy did the gop have for the Soviet failures?

You know, the good ole USA honors life and the dirty commies do not.

Tthe tubes in Ted Steven's internets are apparently clogged with all kinds of stuff and DD is offline until his cable company is able to unclog the clog.  DD regrets the interruption (and the 4 feet of snow outside his abode).  Luckily, his cell phone is clog free, which is how this commenter was made aware of the conditions in Minnesota at the present time. :-)

    Carry on.

Dick needs some kinda rotorooter up there.

    Or Huskies.

Yeah, a team of Huskies would probably be more fun.

Alas, poor Ronnie! I knew him, DD; a fellow of infinite deceit, of most excellent foolery; he hath bored me on the TV a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that spoke other men’s words I know not how oft. Where be your mindless mind now?

Well, I am pretty sure George W wanted to be Ronnie when he grew up!!

    Yo-ICK. hahahah
