The Bishop and the Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age

    A Tale of Two Campuses

The media just doesn't get it.

It's not that black people are whiny.  The comments at the post I link to here upset me even more than the article itself does.

And people want to use the incident at Yale as a counterpoint, as if.

In one case, we have racial injustice ongoing in a southern college campus, and in the other we have what appears to be a thinking couple asking that their students be allowed to be adults.

The media is now trying to make these two college incidents into a big story that somehow becomes a morality tale about political correctness.

    But without pyramids.

I thought Sarah Palinisms died out with Sarah Palin.  Oh, wait, the GOP still lives?

    Comments

The City Journal article was by someone from the Manhattan Institute,  it's a wack job right wing propaganda/targeted hate outfit.

It is funded with Scaife money and 'I never saw a war I didn't Like' Bloody Bill Kristol is a top guy on the Board.

    As if I couldn't tell?

But yeah, geez, the incendiary language just about blew my head off, when I read it.  And then I made the mistake of reading the comments, hoping for rebuttals.  Oy.

Colombia Missouri is not a "southern college campus", and it does have a reputation of one of the premier journalism schools in the nation/world.

Despite that journalism cred, it's hard to tell what the "racial injustice" going on is. Here's CNN description.  Update: better timeline. There's a 5-year-old incident re: cotton balls. There's a pickup truck that yelled slurs at a black/gay student in September (I had guys in a pickup hit me with a beer bottle as a kid - fortunately no big damage). Then there was a drunk student who interrupted a black preparation last month and used some slurs. (last night I had to help throw a drunk off a tram when he kept the tram from moving - he used some bad words as well).

The poop swastika appears to be a hoax, or in the age of smartphones, not 1 pic. The Ben Carson school of journalism? And of course would be an anti-Jewish act, not anti-black.

How this leads to a protest that takes out the president of 4 campuses amazes me. Missouri is 85% white, 11% black. The campus is 79% white, 8% undergrad black w 3% multi, 7% total black w 3% multi. Faculty is 3% black, 4% Hispanic, 16% Asian.

Below's the list of demands. The "acknowledge his white male privilege" gives me a visceral feeling in my stomach. The absurdity that #2 asks him to be removed makes me go WTF? I crawl on my belly and *then* you remove me? #5, go from 4% black staff to 10% in 1 1/2 years? sure, those will be quality hires. What to do with those white and Asian profs, just fire them?

Aside from the blah blah about the costly counseling and racial awareness training (kids must think the school has an unlimited budget), the 1 area that does look like reasonable grounds for complaint is the 91% white staff.

It is a shame that not 1 of their demands involved academics and quality of teaching. It's ironic that the football players will walk out when the football team is 50% black.

    I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.

II. We demand the immediate removal of Tim Wolfe as UM system president. After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.

III. We demand that the University of Missouri meets the Legion of Black Collegians' demands that were presented in 1969 for the betterment of the black community.

IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.

    V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.

VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.

VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals — particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.

VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility.

These students were driven to write such demands, and I don't know all the details, but I stand by them until given reason to stop standing by them.  You haven't given me reason enough.

Wow, that's persuasive. A fake poop story isn't enough - we now have a single student's drunken racial slur at a black play rehearsal. Now let's hold sensitivity training for the entire Universe, bwahaha. But there's more...

    Gamera vs Zigra

Zigra was the former ruler of planet Zigra, in which sea-dwellers preyed upon land-dwellers. After planet Zigra was destroyed by way of Zigra's advancing technology, Zigra flew to Earth in a spaceship with the intentions to conquer the planet and prey on humans instead. Attacking a Japanese moon base, Zigra brainwashed astronaut Lora Lee into becoming his subordinate. Using Lora to abduct doctors Yosuke Ishikawa, Tom Wallace and their children, Zigra explained his history to them. As a show of his strength, Zigra caused several earthquakes that resulted in thousands of deaths, using this as a means to force humanity to surrender.

Contacting authorities, Zigra threatened to kill his hostages unless they surrendered [all of Earth]. After the chidren escaped, Zigra ordered Lora to return to Earth to dispatch them. Despite the UN authorities attempts to defeat Zigra, the alien's technology proves too advanced and they are easily destroyed. Meanwhile, Lora finds the children to a military facility, but the children call out to Gamera, who had previously been trying to discover the identity of the alien.

Funny, I thought *I* wasn't serious during college. Sorry, Lis, but some students drive themselves. It would be simpler if a drunk student says something racist in front of a bunch of blacks, just to kick his lily-white ass and be done with it. Back in the day, this was expected - it's a different issue if it's a large group of whites vs a few blacks. I'd understand the offense if a professor said something racist or other kinds of incidents, but "drunken asshole college kid says 'Nigger'" is hardly up there with KKK hazing of the past. Ever been called "bitch"? Did that require protests and walkouts and resignations and sensitivity training and quotas of women in your environment?

And if the situation is worse than this, as Journalists or at least college students, they should be able to write effectively what the hell is so terrible so a casual reader will understand their complaint and take it seriously, and not think they're a bunch of spoiled babies who learned a few fancy terms like "white privilege".

Oh sorry - it appears the whole uproar is over some black students protesting, reciting events from Missour's last 150 years and holding up the Homecoming Day Parade, including the school president. Have a look, Lis - see how terrible the oppressive antics of the school fascist leadership is. I guess they were "driven" to this as well, even bumped them slowly with a car after 10 minutes - couldn't publish their history lesson in the school paper or on Facebook. I'd rather they called me a dumbass Cracker and be done with it than be bored with all the self-righteous megafone action.

Wow.  I'd hate to see what you'd throw at me if I was to do a pro-Native American piece, PP.

It depends on if you write about a real grievance, or if a professor made the class do a project on say reservations. You didn't actually state what you found objectionable by the school and why it was worth holding the campus/football team hostage to $1million forfeiture per game or making the president resign.  (I'm an alum, by the way - this pisses me off. It's not like Missouri was rolling in huge resources and fancy labs)

I guess because there was something racial said, I'm supposed to gush over the injustice of it all? I'm watching streams of Syrians and Libyans surge into Europe, with half the people trying to welcome them and half afraid and shouting nasty things about them, and no one doing anything about the war that's uprooted them - and these spoiled kids are upset because they can't block off a school president for 10 minutes to give a history lesson - oh wait, they did that - because the school doesn't immediately hire another 400 black staff and faculty because someone got called Nigger from a passing pickup. The pettiness is pretty astounding - with all the poverty, domestic abuse, lack of jobs, police abuse, et al, these folks are finding pretty thin and vague stuff to protest. "We demand no one ever say a mean word to us or we'll hold our breath until we turn blue". Good luck.

Great rant PP. The Mizzou (read my Prez tweets and let's all take some online BS training on racism) Prez is gone.....................nevertheless. The next guy is sure to go beyond tweets and mind numbing online training to improve campus relations.

So suck it up you Confederate flag loving dumbass cracker. (the flag is heritage, that last part you said was OK)

Your 'poop hoax' link is from The Federalist Website:- Ben Domenech, co-Founder written/worked for: Red State (oh, yeah...), Human Events (cannot mention Obama without Kenya and Muslim), American Enterprise Institute (Dick Cheney, Iraq War supporters, even now), George W. Bush administration speech writer (nuff said), Washington Times (Sun Moon's right wing rag), National Review (voice of 'sane' conservatism).

Domenech the 'poop is a hoax' guy is hardly a unbiased source or viewpoint. He has a very big right wing axe of the usual inanity, nonsense, intolerance and hate to grind.

Yeah, figured Federalist was a grunge neoconservative site, but still, if the foo shits, wear it - someone would have taken pics in 2015 just to make sure the Hakenkreuz was right spinning, not Peace-love-vedas left-spinning even if poppy.
