The White House Office of Public Liaison has hired Nicole Frazier, Sen. Cory Gardner's regional director, as the new head of African American outreach, three sources familiar with the hire told Axios.
Why it matters: The position has been vacant for a few months and was a top priority for the administration as it ramps up President Trump's re-election efforts, including plans to boost Trump’s 2020 support among African Americans, one of the sources said.

An incident in the Gulf of Oman was reported by Iranian media on Thursday morning and a UK maritime safety group warned of “extreme caution” in the area.
It comes a month after an attack on four oil tankers off the UAE in the Gulf of Oman. The US blamed Iran for that attack. Iran’s Al-Alam TV said that there had been “two explosions.” Two oil tankers reportedly sent distress signals. Pakistan sources also reported the incident, Iran’s Tasnim News reported [....]

Haitian President Jovenel Moïse is facing escalating challenges to his leadership after government auditors found even more evidence of large-scale corruption, ushering in days of street protests and strikes in multiple Haitian cities.

Late Monday, Rospide Pétion, a radio journalist from Radio Sans Fin, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman. The circumstances are not clear, The Associated Press reported, though he had "just finished a radio program in which he talked about corruption allegations against the administration of President Jovenel Moïse." The scientific literature on this subject is robust, and the consensus overwhelming. The lower your parents’ income, the lower your likely level of educational attainment. Period. But instead of focusing on ways to increase household income, educationists in both political parties talk about extending ladders of opportunity to poor children, most recently in the form of charter schools. For many children, though—especially those raised in the racially segregated poverty endemic to much of the United States—the opportunity to attend a good public school isn’t nearly enough to overcome the effects of limited family income.
