I thought Bruce Bartlett on Bloomberg Radio earlier today gave a proper account of the lineup of candidates who will be "debating" tonight in Hanover, New Hampshire.
"The Republican candidates are all just pandering to the Tea Party".
While the debate is supposed to focus on the "economy" and "jobs" Charlie Rose will have his hands full trying to get any of these contestants to give an answer to a direct question which does not include the words "cut regulations", "cut taxes " or "stop class warfare". In fact those three planks are the sum total of the Republican platform to solve our unemployment problem.
Nor will Rose thwart candidates in their typical Republican debate tactic of ignoring the question which was asked--and in this case pivoting immediately to an attack--especially Perry attacking Romney. Questions on the economy will be ignored because the audience is not on the Dartmouth campus. The audience is the national "Tea Party". All they want to see is the possibility of "laying the wood to Obama"--as Matthew Dowd so bluntly put it. I don't think Romney will tea-pander as much as Perry and Cain because he can't afford to scare the Independents who apparently are giving him his lead in the New Hampshire primary polls as well as in head to head matchups with Obama. However, Romney has already publicly called for Perry to repudiate Rev. Wright's, er Rev. Jeffries' "cult" statements.
As Perry and Romney focus on each other, I wonder if Cain might get a pass on his 999 tax plan. My guess is that Cain will continue to be underestimated and his plan continue to go un-vetted. Romney has no incentive to come down hard on Cain right now. Perry is going to have trouble with the main target, let alone a second one. Perhaps the Bloomberg Terminal can be programmed to do the questioning of Cain's 999 plan. The Concord Coalition, formed in part by New Hampshire Republicans, has called the 999 plan "insane".
A Dallas Morning News editorial mildly chastised Rev. Jeffries but laid down a challenge for Perry to give a full throated condemnation of Jeffrey's unfortunate remarks about the LDS church. And of course the necessity for Perry to raise his "game" has been noted by everyone on the planet who follows politics.
My alternate title for this blog is,
"Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim as the Tea Party Anti-Christ"
Kim represents everything the Tea Party hates and is no doubt leading the world to final conflagration. He is the President of an "elite" University. He is a world renowned expert in Public Health. He headed up an Aid's program for the World Health Organization. And he wasn't even born in Americuh. In other words--things like necessary health care, science and education--very subversive ideas among tea partiers.
Kim was interviewed on Bloomberg Radio this morning. When a slightly facetious question was asked about "Occupy Wall St." and the involvement of "liberal arts" majors, Kim quickly pivoted, stating that he was on an international panel in Korea which is studying liberal arts education, social studies and humanities in America's best Universities because the Koreans, and others, want to broaden their educational experience beyond the focus on technical subjects. So perhaps President Kim can teach those foreigners a thing or two about higher education before the Tea Party takes over America and decimates what's left of our educational institutions.
I think the audience which will include a major component of students and faculty will redeem America following the shameful former audience reactions in Simi Valley and Orlando. I am curious whether the Occupy Wall St. demonstrations will be launched into the debate--and I suspect there might be a groan or two from young people in the audience.
The debate begins at 7:00 EST and I will be forcing myself to watch--having the mute button on high alert, a six pack of Magic Hat #9 Beer from neighboring Vermont, and some aspirin.
Conclusion. In my opinion the winner of this debate, within the Republican milieu, was the Republican party, specifically the Eastern Establishment wing. The setting of candidates around a table created civility assisted by the excellent job of the moderators in keeping the focus on economics and jobs. Julianna was outstanding in keeping Romney's feet to the fire on the tarp bailout question, related to what may be needed in Europe.
Romney is clearly the best communicator and may be on a roll. He won for the first time a poll in Iowa of caucus voters.
It's hard to conceive of Perry coming back in this race, even given his war chest and the Southern advantage. Apparently Perry has $20 million to spend attacking Romney in the early primaries, but his lack of stature and familiarity with anything outside of Texas is very telling and may be lasting and skeptical first impressions hard to overcome.
So, less of a cluster-muck-up than I had thought.
Not one of these candidates has a plan to create jobs now. Nor was there any indication that any of these candidates would ever work in a bi-partisan manner to solve our country's problems. Thus, the losers from this debate are the American people.
Comments
Tom Keane interviewed the President of Pompanoosic Mills Furniture Co. near Hanover. He said that when the deficit debate took place in the Summer, their orders took a nose dive. He relates a lot of our economic problems to a lack of confidence and feels that politicians need to stop talking about the dire consequences of the economy.

Newt unloads on Bernanke.
Occupy Wall St. Two groups. Left wing agitators. Tea partiers, middle class. How do you tell them apart? The tea partiers clean up their trash.

Romney is dominating the debate and Perry looks like an absolute dunce. Perry tried to attack Romneycare and Romney destroyed Perry--comparing the number of uninsured children in Mass. compared to Texas.
Santorum is destroying Cain's 999 plan, took a kind of audience poll of how many would like to pay a 9% sales tax., no one raised their hand. Very good move, took a risk. I wouldn't be surprised if Santorum gets a good bounce out of this debate, at the expense of Cain.
Ron Huntsman looks like the brightest one of the bunch.
Romney was put into a corner about Tarp, finally admitting it was necessary to avoid systemic risk. That would seem to give Obama a good defense.

I only caught glimpses of the battle of the morons.
Everybody calls Romney a robot but does anyone ever catch the robotic musings of Bachmann? She has this tempo along with this tone in her voice that I bet a good PC nerd could copy.
Pizza guy IS a moron. Why he would wish to add a buck to each and every one of his take-outs is amazing. Maybe he assumes the drivers will just lose most of their tips.
But once again Perry comes off as the greatest moron--which is hard to do with B-girl and pizza guy in the same room. Maybe it is because we are subliminally back in the late 90's listening to the former Texas governor discussing terr!
If I were running these damn debates I would give Paul most of the time. I mean by the end minutes, old Ron would have us back before Jim Crow; before the slaves were freed and before the government began the Civil Service System. Ahhhhhhhhhhh,
All Newt wishes to do, of course, is put all dems in prison.
That's all I got. I have no intention of getting further into their discussion.
It just gives me a headache and heartburn.

I understand, I'm hitting a large bottle of diet coke to try to settle my stomach.

How do you manage to force yourself to watch these guys and read about them, Oxy? I accidentally drove through a Romney rally in Hopkinton, New Hampshire yesterday on my way home from work, and I felt for a second like I was driving through some combination of Nazi Germany and Dark Ages France. It gave me the utter creeps. I could never subject myself to watching one of their debates.
by Dan Kervick on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 10:41pm
It is very hard to watch these guys, really. I do get slightly sick at my stomach, but I set myself the task of following it. Enjoy the great weather. It doesn't look like I'm going to get back to Vermont until after the Winter and I really miss it. I was just thinking looking at the debate in Spaulding auditorium that the last time I was there, some years ago, it was for a piano concert. Well, hopefully the place will air out.

Speaking of the Dark Ages, and your related interest in pikes, I watched part and let me tell you, you missed metaphorical head- on-a-pike signs for Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and Ben Bernake. Everything is their fault, everything.

Cain Ain't Able
A Federal Reserve stooge named Herman
Tried givin’ American po’ folk a sermon
“If you ain’t rich
You must be a lazy beotch!”
He’s about as subtle as General Sherman.
Now where does Uncle Tom get the nerve
After working for the Federal Reserve,
(The biggest thieves on the earth),
To question anyone’s net worth
When unemployment’s on an exponential curve?
Herman says “Lift yourself by your laces!
There’s plenty jobs around for all races!”
But where are the factories?
‘Cause with Federal subsidies,
They all went overseas without leaving any traces!
But Herman’s Fed prints out trillions for euro banks
Then hands the bill to taxpayers, without thanks!
Man, it’s as good as it can get
When you’ve got a license to counterfeit,
And now Herman wants to join the Presidential ranks!
Yes, this former pizza peddler named Cain
Says God told him to get in the campaign
With his 9-9-9 tax plan
But turn it over and scan
And the “Mark of the Beast” becomes plain!
When Herman’s tax plan is laid on the table
It’s apparent that it’s a tax increase fable
It’s austerity in disguise
Which Herman vehemently denies
But when asked to prove it, CAIN AIN”T ABLE!

Thank you , Richard. I'm very pleased you liked the limerick.
If you Google CHuckFeney or Charles Ulysses Feney, you'll find dozens more.
Here's a few dittys that I took down Sarah Palin with:
Never underestimate the power of a well timed and placed limerick!
_______________ _______________ __
Ice on Rice
Sarah, the Info Babe, didn’t think twice
When she got her first chance to entice
A black basketball star
‘Cause she loved that coal tar
So she hit it like she was White on Rice!
_______________ _______________ __
The Beast in Sarah
In Alaska, a news girl named Sarah
Whose loins were a steamy caldera
Let one of the black wolverines
Get into her jeans
And use her garage to park his big black Pantera.
Sarah said “That car’s really got the juice!,
And it fits in this garage really loose”!
But the Wolverine had to go,
And then Sarah, don’t you know
True to form, started dating a Moose!
Later “Mama Griz” decided to marry
Her sweetheart polar bear, who’s white ordinary.
Now “Once you go Black,
You never go back!”
Is liable to give Todd his first coronary!
So Mama Griz, the political over achiever
Put some ice on her hot Alaskan beaver.
But now we all know
That there’s more to her show
‘Cause this candidate once had “Jungle Fever”!

Well then I won't be able to get my twenty grand back.
We all await the poetry from Deadrock. Or was that it?

Romney's passion about his prescriptions for China is scary. Because he's not passionate about most things.
How long do you think Huntsman will wait after he drops out to declare as an Independent because of the shame of it all, like Bloomberg?
by artappraiser on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 1:28am
Even an ignorant bubba knows Perry is a dunce. I'd be surprised if he could be elected in Texas again.
But the Tea Party has to go somewhere and I just don't think they'll coalesce around Cain. There are a lot of tea partiers in Congress who would do better than anyone they have at the moment.
by Oxy Mora on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 7:13am
Re China. Romney may have scared even the corporate class on the China rant. Of course, they realize its just red meat for the base.
