    I was a draft dodger Eric. hahahahah

    I was officially numbered at 29? or something really bad so I sent in my papers concerning a college deferment in 1968?

    The next year my number was 309.

    So I just never sent in my deferment papers.

    It was like a...November of '69 and 'they' were already up to 279? and I was scared to death.

    Oh and I recall getting drunk with my friends and I burned my draft card. 

    I had thought I had burnt some attachment but awoke the next morning with a hangover and no draft card. hahahahaha

    All of a sudden, out of nowhere, Nixon stopped counting. hahahahaha

    And that is how I dodged the draft.

    Ray Charles was and is one of my top ten musical artists. Ever!

    And this song is one of my favorites.

    Oh and by the way, I was a chicken but never a chicken-hawk. hahahaha

      Did they still have student deferments after the lottery system started?

      Anyway, not going to  Vietnam was a good thing. I wouldn't encourage anyone to join the military.

    I think a citizen's primary right should be the right to be left alone, but the Marine Corps changed my life.

    I think if there's a war there should be a draft with no exceptions and no deferments for anyone. Then there should be a tax increase equal to the cost of the war. If the costs go up, more taxes. Then every person including the managers, executives and owners of every business that produces war goods should be drafted. The pay for high level executives and owners should be no larger than the highest grade military pay.

    If we're going to send young men and women off to die there should be no profit in it for those safe here. The full cost of the war shouldn't be hidden from the people who decide the war is necessary. Maybe then we'll consider whether the war is worth the cost.

    I have to agree with you there, Ocean-Kat.  And another advantage to that would be, if the kids of the powers that be had to place themselves in harms way, the big wigs would think long and hard before committing to war. As it is now, only the "little people" are expected to fight and die for our country. Dick Cheney had five (five) deferments, and his daughter was born nearly 9 months to the day after they changed the law to give deferments to men who were married with children. Rush Limbaugh got out of serving the country by declaring a boil on his ass.
