Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) said members of the Congressional Black Caucus have spoken to Clinton about anti-poverty legislation sponsored by Rep. James Clyburn, who delivered a crucial endorsement for the former secretary of State in the days before her big win in South Carolina’s primary.
“She has said that she will support that strongly, and we think she’ll have a strong chance of getting that through,” Cleaver said in an interview with The Hill, adding that Clinton “embraced it quickly, which is extremely important to us.”
Good! The anti-poverty legislation, as described in the article seems like an essential step forward. I give Clyburn and Cleaver credit if they elicited Clinton's promise of full support for the legislation in return for their endorsement.
Comments
Cleaver: I'll endorse you, but you need to do something liberal.
Clinton: Okay. Since I am a liberal, that's really not a problem.
Cleaver: All right, then.

I thought that the Congressional Black Caucus was bought off by the Clintons.

You clearly don't understand how this country is run. The CBC is a bought and paid for subsidiary of Wall Street. Both the Clintons and all the members of the CBC are simply taking orders from their Wall Street masters.

Now I understand, Sanders is the only one bucking the system.

Yes. This is a positive as I noted in the post I credit Clyburn and Cleaver to the extent they conditioned support for Clinton on an explicit agreement to provide support to the neediest Americans.

Yeah you're right Hal. Politics is often about compromises between diverse coalitions. This is a positive as it shows how Hillary can bring that diverse democratic coalition to work together. Sanders was likely too pure to make any compromises to get those endorsements. Nice to see you finally coming together with Hillary.
Let me be the first to welcome you.

Sanders often compromises as he did by voting for the Affordable Care Act and while on the Veterans Committee. It appears Clinton had no real choice but to agree to support the Clyburn legislation if she didn't want harmful grumbling about her among the Congressional Black Caucus.

The CBC is just a bunch of grumblers.

That comment reflects the way the CBC thinks that Sanders views the organization. Like it or not, he will have to work with them in Congress. He only reached out to them because he wanted black votes.
