Many unaware that most immigrants in the U.S. are here legally
@ Pew Research Center, June 28, 2018
While there has been considerable attention on illegal immigration into the U.S. recently, opinions about legal immigration have undergone a long-term change. Support for increasing the level of legal immigration has risen, while the share saying legal immigration should decrease has fallen [....]
The shift is mostly driven by changing views among Democrats. The share of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who say legal immigration into the U.S. should be increased has doubled since 2006, from 20% to 40%. Republicans’ views also have changed, though more modestly [....]
The new survey, which was largely conducted before the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border involving immigrant children being separated from their parents, finds deep and persistent partisan divisions in a number of attitudes toward immigrants, as well as widespread misperceptions among the public overall about the share of the immigrant population in the U.S. that is in this country illegally: [....]

I see polls like this all the time that seem to show that a majority of the public supports the democratic position on many issues. I really don't know what to make of them since they don't seem to effect elections or policy outcomes. Perhaps it comes down to the senate where 500,000 people in Wyoming get the same number of senators as 39.78 million California. What ever the reason I don't think we should celebrate too much when it seems like the majority agrees with us.

Well, I am old enough to realize this: when bad things happen that draw attention to an issue, like the child separation thing with immigration and now the Supreme Court opening with abortion, people that don't have the time or inclination to understand what's going on with their government as regards same, finally pay attention and learn some of the nuance. There's a "consciousness raising" as it were. Where something may finally end up happening, because congress critters finally get some direct input. It does go in cycles, there's always a new generation that needs to figure things out, and throw in the people that might have known the situation 20 years ago but it's changed.
On immigration, one thing to keep in mind that the positivity is about legal immigration, not illegal.
I think it might be a major midterm voting issue that the Congress has not managed to do a bill. Both because Trump keeps demagoguing it and because he also seems determined to continue with draconian enforcement against illegals and making things difficult for even green card holders. So many stories about so many nightmares along the lines of yes, as you said "this is our neighbor, he's one of the good ones" just might do it. What all the polls mean combine with what Trump is doing and the whole DACA problem just suggests to me that all voters, even those who supposedly want to be tough on immigrants, want some new laws from Congress on it. Even Trump says he wants that. And they can't manage to do it. It's not going away and looks like it's going to be a factor in the elections for every candidate.

I know you are arta. One would think that eventually the pot would boil over and in our favor. One would think it would have boiled over before now. Yet it hasn't and I'm not sure when or how it will.

Aren't you in your sixties? Maybe I'm wrong ... but if you are, I think your experience lies more in your life than your age. Then again, if you're older, my apologies (though my appreciation of your life experience stands even firmer).

yeah, early 60's, but I was old for my age as a youngin and often hung out with older folks
(there's a down side to the latter: they can lose their marbles or even die on ya!)

Funny - I did the same. My friend's parents always loved me because I was a polite and friendly child. When I got older they liked me because I was an old soul and seemed to understand them more than their kids did - weird, I know. The affinity for older people has carried through my life .. I'm in my mid fifties and still feel closer to those older than me. But I can still kinda sorta try to understand that new-age music!

For the "DOH!" files from FiveThirtyEight.com: Separating Families At The Border Is Really Unpopular; Even Republicans are split on the issue.

I would guess that "support the troops" conservatives might not like this new immigration news too much just like a lot of "family values" conservatives weren't thrilled about taking babies from moms:
