I really liked this story too. Especially that the parents endeavored to let his personality be his epitaph and to let his words speak it.

I imagine it helped take away the pain as well, feeling they were honoring his tough sarcastic spirit in the face of nothing-else-they-can-do. My cousin's kid went as a teenager and it was a bit similar - she left his "gotcha" recording on voicemail ever since, and they did their best to make it less of a sad ordeal. But 5's pretty young to carry that out with panache.
