His legal people are basically arguing that no one should take the president's tweets.seriously
By Eileen Sullivan & Michael S. Schmidt @ NYTimes.com, Aug. 1
WASHINGTON — President Trump called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday to end the special counsel investigation, an extraordinary appeal to the nation’s top law enforcement official to halt an inquiry directly into the president.
Donald J. Trump✔@realDonaldTrump
..This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!
The order immediately raised questions from some lawyers about whether it was an attempt to obstruct justice [....]
Mr. Trump’s lawyers quickly moved to contain the fallout, saying it was not an order to a member of his cabinet, but merely an opinion. An hour and a half after the tweet was posted, Mr. Trump’s lawyers contacted a reporter for The New York Times. In a subsequent telephone conversation, one of his lawyers, Rudolph W. Giuliani, dismissed the obstruction of justice concerns, calling it a “bizarre and novel theory of obstruction by tweet,” adding that it was “idiotic.” [.....]

There are many reports out there about why the Manafort trial has Trump so shaken up - my theory is that it's the first real honest-to-realness trial that has come from what he's been able to so far describe as a "witch hunt". And the very realness of it has shaken him. Russian indictments? Meh. Even the knowledge of upcoming trial(s) didn't make it's way through the head of a man who needs the production to result in a show ... and now it has. And now he knows it's real. With more to come.

Yeah, plus there's that if you've spent any time reading his tweets these today just have such a different feel, a clear sense of panic. Following that instinct, I just checked for any tweets for the "Art of the Deal" ghostwriter Tony Schwartz. This is the comment he has decided to leave 4 hrs. ago, before making a "taking a vacation" announcement:

For perhaps the first time, he's seeing that prosecution can come from crimes much like he himself has committed; serious ones, and in federal court. Not to mention that the Manafort trial (a real one, a serious one!) has him all over the edges of it even if his name is not evoked even once. And not just because of anything we know or don't know - because the very idea of being held accountable for financial (tax?) crimes scares him to death. He's always thought himself above that sort of nonsense.

More on Mueller offer @ WaPo now:
Mueller offers to limit investigators’ questions for Trump
The proposal, the special counsel’s latest effort to secure an interview with President Trump in the Russia investigation, comes as Trump has stepped up his attacks on the probe.

A reminder about this related development reported in the NYT last week, I put a long excerpt here on Barefooted's The Really Big Shoe thread:

He wants to do an interview with Mueller, NYT: Trump Pushes for Interview With Mueller Against Lawyers’ Advice:
Schmidt & Haberman aren't clear where they are getting this paragraph from but it certainly sounds like the correct explanation to me:
Plus there's the mano a mano thingie, what's a little Mueller compared to Kim or Rouhani, Trump must look like strong man to the fans, not mouse?
