I think most of what's said in the piece can be explained by this by Trump at his rally, with this "babies" demagoguery:
He tells them the "stories" they want to hear, the simplistic way they like to hear them. Just like the hypocritical televangelists of past years who did the same thing. Even including with the whole call and response action. He's respectful, too, one of the few groups you never catch him dissing. He plays along just fine (though not great, no Pence) at prayer breakfasts and the like. It's the "stories", they don't care about the morals or beliefs of the storyteller, they just want someone in power who tells their favorite stories, representing them and their grievances and desires. Lowest common denominator, not eloquent, he's watched enough TV to know not to make it eloquent....
