He killed 4, wounded 3, in 7 shootings and 1 carjacking from 12:56 a.m, to about 8:30 p.m. The police did their job but the justice system did not: was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder in 2020 but released early. This time he got into a standoff, refusing to get out of the hijacked vehicle after a high speed chase, which police surrounded. The SWAT Team was called in to assist and he was taken into custody (peacefully as you can see in the above video) with the help of Shelby County Sheriff's deputies.

So 4 more dead, 3 wounded, a whole city on lockdown, as well as tons of taxpayer money spent ALL BECAUSE he wasn't sufficiently dealt with after violent crime in 2020. Reality is that keeping guns away from people like this is pie in the sky - mentally ill or otherwise violently inclined can acquire them illegally including ghost guns. You must lock them up or supervise some other way 24/7.

And if you are going to continue to let them out on the street unsupervised 24/7, then yes, more police will help limit their damage. Defunders who think too many are in prison need to wake up and smell reality - there's people out on the streets that shouldn't be. If you want to change prisons to more luxurious halfway houses with 24/7 supervision: good luck! Including that I hope you are willing to fill that job instead of running for public office or some such -- cause no one else wants it, that's for sure.

People all around the world got the message that Osama crafted, it was a declaration of war on western civilization. He fancied himself a Putin or a Tojo and people got his message loud and clear. Everyone knew.

You are confusing 9/11 with what many politicians turned it towards later.

Nobody thought he was looking to bomb the local schoolhouse. He targeted the WORLD Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a symbol of democracy, the U.S. Capitol.

Were Islamic radicals going to be emboldened? Of course, but they were the envisioned soldiers, the kamikaze pilots and other suicide bombers in Osama's imagined army.

Edit to add: by arguing this, you harm your own argument about taking the threat of ISIS et. al. (Al qaeda versions 2, 3, 4, etc.) seriously.

Say what? Tojo was desperate for oil, his Asia play was running out of steam. He wasn't trying to do a symbolic attack against the West - he had to cripple the US fleet at the same time he was hitting the Brits in Singapore. There are some parallels to the crafty surprise attack, but one was traditional military (arcing by the Aleutians with electronics turned off for a silent running of thousands of miles), one was a very small team of saboteurs. Tojo nearly crippled our naval fighting capacity but for some luck with ships out of harbor, and instead of knocking us out before it began, he sucked us into a declaration of war on 2 fronts. ObL mostly wounded our pride and dialed up our insecurities - whether we can directly credit him for sucking us into Iraq is debatable - more "neocon + daddy grudges gone wild".

Note that Japanese kamikaze came later in the Pacific War for various reasons, not early at Pearl Harbor.

And i didn't say 9/11 was garden variety Islamic terrorism - it was audacious, from the 911 part through the 2 sets of patriotic/economic/politically symbolic targets. Put it up with the Munich Olympics.

It's still odd that after we declared war on Japan, Hitler declared war on us - he didn't seem like the one to honor treaty obligations, and hard to see what the upside was pulling our arsenal and troops into more direct war, but maybe he thought he'd scare us off. The West 4th Mac/6th Block Association hired security officers strapped with pistols from Black Tie Protection Services of upstate Monroe, to surveil West Fourth Street between MacDougal Street and Sixth Avenue for the month of August at various hours of the day.

Resident Brian Maloney said his neighborhood of 16 years is suffering from an influx of emotionally disturbed drug addicts and an exodus of cops, made all the worse by bail reform and soft-on-crime Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Private guards was the only logical way to combat the chaos of a revolving-door justice system, he said.

“We have residents saying, ‘We’re a liberal city. The Village is a very liberal area.’ Well, I’ve lost my liberal-ness on this. It baffles me,” Maloney told The Post. “The security certainly gave me peace of mind.” [....]

A homeless man has been charged after he attacked two women, including a 71-year-old, and an infant on the Upper East Side Wednesday.

Antonio Marquez's assault spree began just before 10:45 a.m. on Third Avenue and East 78 Street when police said he allegedly threw a bottle at a infant girl, striking her in the head.

The 58-year-old then continued walking and struck a 50-year-old woman in the back of the head and a 71-year-old woman in the head, according to police.

Robert Fitch, the father of the 13-month-old, told the New York Post that he "heard [the bottle] hit her head."

"It was a water bottle or soda bottle," he added. "My wife was pushing the stroller, so I handed her off to my wife. One of the doormen and I confronted the guy and were like, ‘What's your deal?’ He put up his dukes up and tried to fight me."

Fitch told the Post that several doormen from the area came to his aid and surrounded Marquez, holding him there until police came and arrested homeless man. Marquez has since been charged with assault.

Another doorman, Mike Lombardi, added that the 71-year-old is a cancer survivor "who was coming back from rehab" when she was hit.

....A group of armed thugs slashed a 30-year-old tourist from Belgium in the face Saturday morning in an unprovoked attack at a Chelsea subway station, police said.

The four or five assailants set upon the victim as she walked down the southbound staircase with a group of companions at 8:43 a.m. at the A/C/E station at West 23rd street and Eighth Avenue, police said.

The attackers approached her and cut her face, leaving her with a wound that was treated at the scene, the NYPD said.

The victim was seen talking to police after the attack with a bandage on the side of her face and neck.[....]

In the 10th Precinct — which covers Chelsea — transit crime is up 80% through Sept. 4 compared to the same period in 2021, with 18 incidents versus 10, NYPD statistics show.

Major crime in the precinct jumped 43% this year with a 200% rise in murders. There were three murders through Sept. 4 compared to 1 during the same period in 2021.

The brazen attack on the tourist on a Saturday morning stunned some straphangers.

“It was 9 o’clock in the morning, It’s a very populated area. Criminals are getting bolder,” said Brittany, 33, from Astoria who declined to give her last name.

She said recently had a frightening encounter while riding the train.

“An unhinged man was screaming at me and another woman on the subway. He was threatening us. It was scary,” she said.

She said she now rides without her earbuds in and pays more attention.

Earlier this month, a 21-year-old tourist from St. Louis was raped after a man approached her at the Times subway station and offered to show her around [....]

CHICAGO - A convicted felon has been charged with fatally shooting a woman at a funeral reception in Englewood while free on electronic monitoring in three pending cases.

Marcell Hunter, 27, had a history of racking up felony charges and skipping out on court hearings before he gunned down Nikki Conner on June 21, prosecutors disclosed during a bail hearing Thursday.

The two crossed paths at a party late that night in the 5900 block of South Bishop Street, where a group of people had gathered after a funeral that Conner had attended earlier in the day.

Conner and her best friend met up with another friend but were quickly urged to leave because they were outsiders, prosecutors said.

The person who told them to go warned that her brother was upset — and armed with a handgun.

When Conner and her friends retreated to a corner to talk, Hunter walked up with a handgun, asked "Who the f— they were" and told them to leave, prosecutors said.

As Conner explained that they were just talking and were taking off, Hunter shot her once in the head and two more times in the legs, prosecutors said.

She was rushed to the University of Chicago and pronounced dead.

Conner’s friend was later shown Facebook profiles belonging to people who were on the block and recognized Hunter, prosecutors said. She brought the Facebook photos to police investigators, who created a lineup with a different photo of Hunter.

He was positively identified by Conner’s friends, one of whom knew Hunter "from the neighborhood for several years," prosecutors said.

Detectives learned Hunter was on electronic monitoring at the time of the attack and wasn’t allowed to leave his home that day, prosecutors said. Data showed he wasn’t there for much of the day, and his monitoring bracelet had been tampered with.

Prosecutors said the bracelet didn’t reconnect with the "host site" until 11:37 p.m. — 26 minutes after the shooting.

Hunter was arrested Wednesday at his home in South Shore, prosecutors said. He initially claimed he didn’t know anything about the shooting and later requested a lawyer when investigators presented him with the electronic monitoring evidence.

His time on electronic monitoring started in February 2018, when he was charged in a felony gun case, prosecutors said. Hunter was later arrested on a marijuana charge, but the case was dismissed and he was released back on electronic monitoring that June.

He skipped a court hearing that October, cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet and went missing for three years, prosecutors said. He didn’t resurface until last September, when we was arrested in a new felony gun case and hit with an escape charge.

He was held in custody on the escape charge until February, when he was released on a recognizance bond and placed back on electronic monitoring.

Hunter was convicted of a felony count of possession of a controlled substance in 2015 and sentenced to four years in prison.

His public defender, Richard Paull, said Hunter got through his freshman year at Robeson High School and now has four kids, including two stepchildren. His partner is now pregnant with another child.

Paull said the reception "sounds like it’s gang-related" and claimed the people who identified his client on Facebook may have some form of "bias." He asked for a bond no greater than $100,000 — and urged Judge Barbara Dawkins to place Hunter back on electronic monitoring if he’s released.

In response, Dawkins said there’s no indication the gathering was linked to any gang activity.

"And even if it was gang-related," she said, "that doesn’t give any right to another individual to fire shots into another individual’s body."

Noting that Hunter has two pending gun cases, Dawkins said Hunter was previously "given the benefit of being on electronic monitoring" and is now considered a "flight risk." She ordered him held without bail.

His next court date was set for Oct. 5.

[...] Chesterfield Police were called to the Bayview Drive condo at noon when the 35-year-old mother who lives there with the family escaped the home with stab wounds, cradling her five year old daughter.

Police say when they went into the home they found the mother’s life partner and father to their children, 57-year-old Jim Matthews, dead.

Matthews was also a beloved radio anchor at WWJ.

Chesterfield police say they found Matthews 10-year-old son bound and brutally beaten in the closet, they also found the 54-year-old male suspect in the basement suffering from self inflicted wounds and an overdose.

Police say the suspect was at the home frequently, his relationship to the family is unknown.

Sunday evening the kids and their mother are still in the hospital, the young son is sedated after trying to protect his father from the suspect.

Healy shared, "My granddaughter and her mother, they’re both in stable condition, thank the Lord. My grandson he is in ICU and in critical condition." [....]
