There were a couple small scenes that really get to me in Godfather II. Mobster Hyman Roth wants Michael to invest in Havana in the 50's and the Godfather is hedging his bets. As he is driven around the capital city he sees:

CUT TO: Outside on the streets of Havana. A man runs in front of JOHNNY OLA's car and the driver honks the horn at him. A Cuban police officer walks up to the car and talks to the driver.

OFFICER

[Something in Spanish]

[We see OFFICERS making an arrest of a rebel.]

DRIVER

He say that they're making an arrest and that in a few minutes he'll let us through.

JOHNNY OLA

It's nothing. Just some lousy bandits. The police are cleaning them up.

[The rebel pushes a police captain into the car and explodes a grenade that he had hidden in his jacket.]

Now Michael ends up at Roth's birthday party which really is a set up to put the squeeze on Corleone:

MICHAEL

I saw an interesting thing happen today. A rebel was being arrested by the military police, and rather than be taken alive, he exploded a grenade he had hidden in his jacket. He killed himself, and took a captain of the command with him.

[ROTH looks concerned]

Right JOHNNY.

JOHNNY OLA

Those rebels, you know, they're lunatics.

MICHAEL

Maybe so -- but it occurred to me. The soldiers are paid to fight -- the rebels aren't.

ROTH

What does that tell you?

MICHAEL

See, Michael figures there just aint no defense against a people who will kill themselves in order to get their point across; in order to harm the people they see as their tormenters. The upside is that much of the blast from such a rear-end bomb would be absorbed by the terrorist's body--perhaps enough of the explosion that the airplane would not crash.

I used to fly quite a bit for a Midwestern nerd. I have not in almost ten years. If I was doing biz again and flying, I sure would not like to spend the extra time fixing my carrying case and bending over in airports wondering if my under shorts were clean.

The repubs are acting irresponsibly, of course. Who would have guessed that the repubs would be yelling that my President is soft on communism......oops that is, soft on Jihadists or rad Muslims or whatever the manure spreader is emailing in his repub talking points these days.

How do people, ever at this liberal web site, defend this kind of language coming from the repubs? As far as I am concerned they are traitors to my country and my flag. Fuck em.

The Godfather clip is there to remind us that someone who wishes to kill himself in order to blow up others poses a real problem. But the film covered things that occurred in Cuba by Cubans.

Mark my words, people will, from time to time blow themselves up and kill others with intent. Or they will kill family or friends or coworkers and then turn the weapon on themselves.

Today a man shot and killed several of his co-workers. He was pissed off about pension rights or something. A factory worker who was suing his employer opened fire Thursday morning at an electrical equipment plant in North St. Louis, killing three co-workers before apparently taking his own life, St. Louis fire and police officials said.
