"Reuters) - The core at Japan's Fukushima nuclear reactor has melted through the reactor pressure vessel, Democratic Congressman Edward Markey told a hearing on the nuclear disaster on Wednesday.
"I have been informed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that the core of Unit Two has gotten so hot that part of it has probably melted through the reactor pressure vessel," said Markey, a prominent nuclear critic in the House of Representatives."
Tepco plugged the leak, but water around the plant shows radioactive levels 7.5 million times normal. No way that can't be harmful for life in the ocean. Imagine how long it will take to cool for cleanup; some sources say a decade. Then what?
A majority of Americans polled recently think nuclear power is safe; no one seems to ask if they are concerned that there is no safe way to store spent rods, which sit in pools at the plants.
So many experts haave done the math, and say if there were national will, we could provide the energy we need with safe alternatives. And yet...
