A Day Late Year-End Review at the Haikulodeon - pt. 1

2015 was an amazing year at the Haikulodeon.  I have been going through all the comments this past year and there are so many great haikus, I'm going to post this year-end review in two parts.  I've included some of my haiku comments in the mix because they fit into the thread and sparked other responses.   Thanks to all who responded last year, including Barefooted, Richard Day, Guy named Lulu, moat, Oxy Mora, Peracles Please, Trkingmomoe and Ramona.

    Happy New Year. Dagbloggers!!

Our quest for knowing is the

    tanka haiku:

    "That's me with Santa"...
"Why are you on a horse and
    not on a reindeer?"

    Grandma paused and then whispered,
    "Dear, no-one sits on Rudolph."

    Delicious Pecan Fruit Cake

Fruit Cake has a bad reputation as being dry and heavy like a brick.  I found this delicious recipe many years ago on the back of a cake mix.

    Bourbon Sweet Potato Cookies

This cookie recipe will really add something different to your holiday list of cookies.  It is not overly sweet and full of flavors that just roll of your tongue.  It has real wow factor going for it. If you do make these for cookie exchanges and gift giving make sure you include the recipe because you will asked for it.

    Wabby's Marine

When I was five years old I had my own Marine. His name was George but I called him Zorro. I am, after all, a child of the television age and he seemed like a Zorro to me.

He was my brother-in-law's brother (did I ever mention I was born 15 years after my eldest sister?) and he was a frequent visitor at my parent's house. He was there as often as my sister and b-i-l were and sometimes even when they weren't. George liked us. George liked me. No, he wasn't a child molester. It's one of the few bad things he wasn't.

A Fresh and Fabulous Friday Afternoon at the Haikulodeon

    'midst the brown marsh grass,
an old wooden dock waits for
    its boat to return.

    low clouds fill the sky,
    all journeys begin with hope
    wood wharf seeks closure.

A Ghastly, Ghostly, Frightening Afternoon at the Haikulodeon

Here's this week's headless heap of haikus:

    (Ding-Dong!)  Trick or Treat!!
"Who are YOU supposed to be?!"

    Life is but a dream,

    Don't Try This At Home

We had a house guest in town who had cooked a lot of good meals for us so it was time for me to represent and cook something good myself before she left. I saw there was a bag of these cute little orange peppers in the fridge from somebody's shopping trip so I chopped them up and threw them in with the garlic I was heating as base of the sauce for a chicken fricassee. It was a dish I had made many times from whatever was around.

    Techno-ignorance

Could you get by without the internet? Google? Word processing? GPS?

Most of us, when asked, would quickly and easily say sure, no problem, we'd adjust. But when was the last time you used (or saw) a telephone book or a map? Actually looked up reference material in a book? When did you last write something of length in longhand?

If you immediately reach for your phone before your feet touch the ground in the morning, hesitate. There will never be a reason or a way to discard the importance of technology - but it may be just as important to be able to survive it.

How I Ruined A Saturday Afternoon

I went to a garden party.
    Rick Nelson wasn’t there.

There was no music of any kind.
    Just mounds of Tupperware.

    My hostess was a woman,
A stranger to me I’m afraid.
I was dragged to this thing by my cousin’s wife
    To benefit her Lady’s Aid

    Danger In Donald's Name

Donald Trump is becoming a dangerous leader of an ignorant, angry base of people who don't give a damn about politics. They aren't looking for ways to improve our economy, policies to help the middle class or the wealthy, taxes up or down, nor do they care about wars in general - their focus is clearly on nationalism with a very white bent. "Immigration" means keeping non-whites out, "unemployment" means a Mexican took your job. "Poor" equals black and dangerous, "religion" means Christian.
