An interesting reminder that civil rights doesn't just have to do with minorities:

Anthony DiPippo, who was found not guilty of a grisly rape and murder after his third trial, settled with Putnam County for $12 million, the county announced today, a move the district attorney lashed out against.
After being convicted of raping and murdering 12-year-old Josette Wright at two separate trials, DiPippo was acquitted in 2016 after 20 years behind bars, and walked away a free man.
DiPippo was alleged to have committed the crime with his friend Andrew Krivak, who remains in jail after he was convicted in 1997, but was granted a new trial last year. The Putnam County District Attorney's Office's appeal of that ruling is pending.
Following his acquittal, Putnam County was exposed to liability for federal civil rights violations, including wrongful conviction and due process claims. Despite this, Putnam County's District Attorney Robert Tendy blasted the legislature's decision, saying the call was "foolish and totally uninformed."
"I'm 100 percent opposed to it. I think it's an incredibly foolish and uninformed and dangerous decision that the legislature has done," Tendy said [....]
The Trump administration has accelerated its purge of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), in what critics warn is a further step towards turning Voice of America and other public broadcasters into propaganda outlets. .. a controversial former radio talk show host had been hired as a senior adviser to USAGM leadership. A CNN investigation found that Frank Wuco had a record of outrageous insults and groundless claims. He called President Barack Obama “a Kenyan” referred to the Democratic congressional leader Nancy Pelosi as a “Nazi”, and claimed former CIA director John Brennan had converted to Islam ....
This is an editorial by the WSJ's editorial board published on Monday evening. It includes a 3:26 minute video produced by them labeled "Progressives to Cities: Drop Dead" and Wonder Land: The ruin of major liberal cities by progressive policies is a significant political event which describes progressives basically attacking a lifestyle that liberals hold dear after the peaceful protests faded. It can be viewed without subscription. (I don't follow Newt, his retweet of their editorial just happened to turn up when I searched for "Portland protests". I am not surprised as this topic is red meat for him.)

This has a SUPERB local video report from Weds. night news with statements of great clarity from the mayor and Richmond's commonwealth attorney about attacks on their courthouse and other buildings by an antifa-like group, and a statement from the police chief at the end on the alleged perps. I was really impressed, pros all around, including the coverage. The mayor, attorney and police chief make Portland and Chicago authorities look pretty pitiful in comparison as far as communication is concerned. Also includes a text report and tweeted photos of the damage and mug shots of the arrested, but I highly recommend watching the 3 min. local news video at the top. Beginning excerpt.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney says overnight rioting left 22 windows damaged at the John Marshall Courts Building and a trail of damage at other businesses in parts of downtown.
“If you want to break windows, damage property, vandalize and undermine this moment of pain, you’re going to be alone doing that,” said Stoney.
Stoney said the group called Richmond Strike is responsible for the damage.
Vandals sprayed graffiti in the area. Other buildings that were damaged include the Wells Fargo building, the Omni hotel and a Starbucks [....]
