Another Republican senator throws in the towel

Flake was never a "moderate." Still, it's a bad sign for the country when people like Roy Moore seize control of the GOP from people like Jeff Flake. Despite everything that has happened, some Democrats still celebrate when "unelectable" right-wingers force out establishment Republicans, but let's not forget that Donald Trump was "unelectable" until he was elected. America was greater when the GOP was sane.

The cheers express the hope that a Republican candidate is so far out of the mainstream that a Democrat can win. The truth is anyone running as a Republican now is agreeing with Trump’s agenda.

It's short-term thinking. Many decent politicians have been forced out of the GOP as conservative insurgencies drive the party ever rightward. That has occasionally helped Democrats win seats against folks like Todd Akin and Christine O'Donnell. But we are now living the long-term consequence: the most dangerous and incompetent federal government since the 1900s, not to mention the many state governments dominated by right-wing lunatics.
Maybe Democrats can claw back a thin majority in 2018 or 2020, but if these fascists complete their conquest of the GOP, then the next time Republicans capture the federal government, it will be game over for American democracy.

The core problem is the electorate.

You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. ;)
