House Dems authorize subpoena for full Mueller report

[....] The vote gives Nadler the discretion to issue a subpoena at any time to Attorney General William Barr, a move that likely would launch a legal confrontation between Congress and the Justice Department.

But Nadler indicated that he won't issue the subpoena right away. Rather, he said he intends to give Barr "time to change his mind" about redacting the report before submitting it to Congress.

The party line committee vote authorized Nadler to issue subpoenas for five former senior aides to President Donald Trump as part of a broad obstruction of justice and corruption probe, including former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former adviser Steve Bannon, former White House counsel Don McGahn, McGahn's former deputy Ann Donaldson and former communications director Hope Hicks [....]

President Donald Trump appeared to backpedal on Tuesday from his initial desire for special counsel Robert Mueller’s report to be released to Congress and the public, a sharp diversion from his enthusiastic calls for the release of the highly anticipated report.

In a series of tweets, Trump disparaged congressional Democrats for their efforts to obtain the full report; noted that one of them had opposed the public release of grand jury information from independent counsel Kenneth Starr’s report on Bill Clinton; and tweeted a Fox News clip of lawyer Alan Dershowitz emphasizing that the Justice Department could keep the entire Mueller report confidential [....]

Michael Cohen wants House Democrats to keep him out of prison

Michael Cohen’s lawyers told congressional Democrats in a letter Thursday that President Trump’s former fixer has discovered a trove of new files that could be relevant to their investigations into Trump.

The lawyers made this claim as part of an unorthodox appeal to key Democrats to help them keep Cohen out of prison. The lawyers asked the Democrats to put in writing that not only has Cohen already been significantly helpful to them, but also that he could be a valuable asset going forward.

Cohen’s lawyers contend that time is running out before his three-year prison sentence begins in May to go through the recently accessed 14 million files from his computers and phones, including all emails and voice recordings.

The lawyers tease that Cohen has “located several documents that we believe have significant value to the various congressional oversight and investigation committees,” and needs to remain out of prison to continue sifting through them [....]

It’s worth noting that Cohen didn’t find a new hard drive or documents; what he’s offering to share with Congress is what was recently returned to him by investigators. He hadn’t been able to review or share these materials with lawmakers when he testified earlier this year.

Actions to take:

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
