Justin Rosario at the Daily Banter suggests that identity politics won Virginia for the Democratic Party. Ed Gillespie got 63% of the votes of white men and 51% of the votes of white women. This happened despite a racist Republican campaign. Democratic winners included the first two Latina women elected to the House, the first openly transgender candidate, the first openly lesbian elected to office, the first Asian American elected, and only the second black Lt Governor elected. The election in Virginia suggests that diversity is a good thing. The officials replaced in the House were all white guys. Virginia elected people who represented the base of the Democratic Party

Rachel Maddox noted tonight that Jennifer Carroll Foy , an African-American woman, and Elizabeth Guzman, a Latina, were both inspired by the Bernie Sanders group “Our Revolution”.

In New Jersey, Ashley.Bennett, a black woman, ran for a House seat to punish a Republican male legislator who mocked the Women’s March. The Women’s March was the largest post-election protest in history. Bennett won the seat.

I would add that Northam did get out the minority vote and did substantially better among whites than Hillary or other Democratic candidates have done in recent statewide elections:
This supports the argument that I have been making for years. In order to win, Democrats must stress intersectional issues like jobs, health care, and the environment while addressing directly the more discrete concerns of people and communities of color. Tom Perez made this exact point in his victory lap on CNN after the network called Virginia. Of course having Trump to run against doesn't hurt.

I did note that Sanders inspired two women who won in Virginia on Tuesday.

This supports the argument that I've been making for years - when a full bonkers thieving crazoid gets in office, people will have that "oh shit" moment and start to take things seriously again. For a bit. A little bit. And then, the antidote to teh cray is talking about sensible bread-and-butter sane things.
