Rio's 200-year old National Museum hit by massive fire

BRASILIA, Sept 2 (Reuters) - A 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro was hit on Sunday by a massive fire, images from television station Globo showed, threatening its collection of more than 20 million items ranging from archeological findings to historical memorabilia.

According to Globo's website, there was no information yet on potential deaths, injuries, cause of the fire or extent of damage at Rio's Museu Nacional [....]

The @britishmuseum collection is estimated at 8 million works.
The collection of @MuseuNacional in Brazil which was destroyed today is estimated at 20 million objects. TWENTY MILLION. The museum was 200 years old.

Yeah, poof, 200 yrs. and 20 million irreplaceable items up in smoke, the massiveness of it makes you realize how rare it is that it happens, that most large museums know how to protect or at least pre-empt and/or minimize and do so successfully.

Now I am thinking what about records? cross fingers that they have some off site/digitized, but scarily sounding like they had no money for such modern conveniences.

Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.

Actions to take:

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
