Pat Caddell, who was Carter’s pollster, sent this tidbit and considers it to be a meaningful indicator:
Superman may be a comic book character, but he is very much an iconic cultural figure to Americans, particularly the Baby Boom generation.
As reported by Laura Hudson in Comics Alliance:
The key scene takes place in “The Incident,” a short story in Action Comics #900 written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. In it, Superman consults with the President’s national security advisor, who is incensed that Superman appeared in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime, no doubt an analogue for the recent real-life protests in the Middle East. However, since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

I think it's more than "fun". When this kind of message makes its way into pop culture, (aka: comics), it's showing a more important cultural shift, IMO. that said, we'll wait with baited breath to see whether the writer of said episode gets more work from Action Comics.

Was Superman actually a US Citizen in the first place? He was born in Kenya on Krypton and entered the country as an infant. Neither of his natural parents were citizens, and I don't think adoption conferred citizenship until 2000.

Now we're getting to the seamy underbelly of this story: the co-opting of the story by the status quo. Well played man. There's a future for you st Fox News if the architecture/building thang doesn't work out. ;)
