Racial bias was a major factor in the election of Donald Trump. If you mention this, you are dismissed as labeling all Trump supporters as racists. The professor is dismissed because people want to pretend that racial bias was not important. People want to sugar coat what the election says about our fellow citizens. Trump began with the Birther movement. Trump supporters are tired of dealing with people who did not share their skin color. They stand by Trump's ban on Muslims and deportation of immigrants. They are in agreement with suppressing black votes and have no empathy for blacks killed by police.
Racial bias is more important than economics. Sanders economic message is not going to appeal to Trump supporters. Michael Moore is planning a Broadway show to appeal to the kinder nature of Trump supporters. He will make an economic appeal. He will fail.

Interviews with Democrats who voted for Trump suggest that it will be difficult for Democrats to win them back. They do not feel that they benefited during the Obama years. They also sense that urban elites are directing money away from them to special interest groups. I see no clear path to recapture these voters.

Edit to add:
Democrats are likely to continue to get out white working class voters while ignoring outreach to their most loyal base.
