Typically, Democrats don't run ads against Republicans until after the primaries (and vice-versa). To me, this speaks of Obama's team or those who support him not wanting Obama to run against Romney and thinking that Republicans will do their work for him. Given that many evangelicals will look for whatever reasons they can find not to vote for a Mormon (if they're not willing to state it out right), I think this strategy could work.

In a way, though, the advert actually promotes Romney as the only serious challenger, or the only one that worries Obama's team.
