Newsweek reporter Kurt Eichenwald notes in his article,
Dear Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, I Am Not Sidney Blumenthal,
He recognized his own words in a Wki-Leak-dumped email purportedly written to Clinton from Sidney Blumenthal. It was cut & pasted to give the opposite impression, and the words were not Eichenwald's in the first place.
Donald ran with it, eliciting the usual "Lock her up!" Reaction from the crowd.

It's much the same as how they have Thomas Jefferson or some historic figure talking anachronistic jingoism about cutting taxes or putting God in government or some other placing of words in their mouths. They simply don't care - we knew that any Clinton emails that appeared would be run through and appropriated in some fashion to shoot her down. If she said, "I'm going to pick up Chelsea at the hairdressers" they would have said it was while the consulate in Benghazi was burning, and by the time it was fact-checked and found false, a few million backers would have heard it and believed it as truthy enough. I've been getting these misleading emails that Snopes was built on since simply forever.
