Lots of Cabinet officials -- and I mean LOTS -- have either resigned or been fired by President Donald Trump in his first 20 months in office. But no one has quit in quite the same way as Defense Secretary James Mattis did Thursday night.
"Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position," Mattis wrote to Trump in a pointed two-page letter that he hand-delivered to the commander in chief earlier Thursday afternoon.
And then, this [....]

That was more than a letter of resignation provided today by Defense Secretary James Mattis, it was a bright red line in American history.

It's fun watching the talking heads explode, the conspiracy theorists crawl from beneath their rocks, politicians act shocked and old war dogs just fade away because of Promises Made and Promises Kept.
There is no viable realistic goal in Syria now that the IS has been defeated in Iraq and Syria. We could stay there another ten years and some remnant of the IS would probably still be there so why not let the Russians deal with that and all the rebuilding costs in that quagmire. The supposedly reformed Stalinist Kurds helped us while we helped them defeat their main enemy the IS. Nation building for the Rojavians is a dumb idea and they will need to make some kind of reintegration agreement with the Syrians.
It is being reported that Trump will soon order troops home from Afghanistan which is another place to declare victory and get out of another endless quagmire. China is already treating with the Afghan government and building a base there so this is one instance where letting them carry that load may be to our advantage.

Troops on Okinawa aren't "nation building", but they provided security for the region. Troops in Rammstein weren't "nation building", but they provided security for the region. I'm less concerned about Afghanistan because who gives an actual fuck, but Syria is in the middle of a much nearer fray, and it's a Putin jumping-off point for Mediterranean & Mideast mischief. The vacuum, as AA's article notes, will be harmful, despite Aaron's gleeful peace-politicking.

The era of total victory and unconditional surrender is ancient history. It's quite amazing that we were able to use those outcomes to build two allied nations from the ashes of two of the most evil empires the world has ever seen. It's a bit ironic that the Japs are being encouraged and trusted to rearm to project power with us against China while our troops in Germany serve a dual purpose of occupation force and deterrent against Russia. I doubt we will ever trust the Krauts enough to allow them to rearm and our troops will remain there as a reminder that there will never be a Fourth Reich.
I have sympathy for the Kurds and their history but they are too oddball and cult like to be dependable allies beyond the destruction of the Califate. Trump's rejection of insane Clintonite R2P intervention in Syria, to start a dogfight with the Russians, could produce the best possible results in Syria. He's begun to rebuild the strained alliance with Turkey and whatever people think of Erdogan they are key players in this overcomplicated conflict. The Turks along with Russia may be able to end this conflict and convince Assad that his future will be brighter with them and not with Iran.

So the sane Peter writes the 1st paragraph, and who writes the 2nd?

One point on how uninformed and delusional you are: Germany rearmed starting 60 years ago. Germany is among the top 5 arms exporters in the world, and among the top 15 in defense spending. Aside from various missile, artillery, battlefield weapons, they specialize in heavy tanks, armored vehicles, war ships and nuclear missile capable submarines.

As to "eras of victory or surrender", real Americans are asking this:
How will we ever recover from our embrace of this treasonous, crude, vulgar, venal, infantile, draft-dodging, p*ssy-grabbing, pornstar-screwing, Putin-loving, ally-insulting, dictator-appeasing, charity-robbing, serial bankrupt, lifelong bunco artist and compulsive, inveterate liar?

Perhaps I should have better explained my point about Germany so an intellectually challenged reader wouldn't become confused and spout a foolish rude reply. If you knew much about Germany or Japan you would know they were allowed to develop modest self defense forces but no offensive capability. Even with their SDF's they must still seek shelter under the umbrella of the mighty US offensive shield. It was only a few years ago that Germany was allowed to participate in offensive actions in the ME and then only in a support capacity. TDS seems to have advanced so much in some cases that its victims can only manage to repeatedly parrot hysterical talking points, ad nauseam.

I don't think we are going to see "the best possible outcome in Syria", but I'm glad Peter wants to end military interventionism. I'm sticking with my gleeful peace politicking; I don't see that endless war has produced better results.
