A violent attack on two mosques Friday afternoon struck at the very heart of New Zealand, a country that prides itself on being both peaceful and diverse, after a gunman entered two mosques during afternoon prayers, killing at least 49 people. An additional 42 people are being treated for injuries sustained in the attacks in Christchurch, police said. Two are in critical condition, including a four-year-old.
New Zealand police have charged a 28-year-old man with murder, and have taken two others into custody. A fourth person turned out to have been arrested on an unrelated charge [....]

This shooting happened the same day that Trump specifically encouraged his supporters to commit violence during an interview with Breitbart News.
If there is going to be a balkanization of America, it will be brought about more by the recklessness and immorality of the Trump administration than by any sinister plans hatched in New Zealand. link

It's not solecism with Trump, he cannot express sympathy for others, because he has none.
He's faking it, like he fakes everything else (health care plans, his charity, his university, nuclear deals, Jared's qualifications, porn star payoffs, believing Kim or Bone Saw, invasions of immigrants he hires by score, etc)

Speaking of talking about it, I liked Booman's piece, thank you. I also found this good about how not to feed the trolling with all these mass murder for attention events:

Seems quite in the spirit of what Osnos says:

Heartbreaking:

Mucad Ibrahim's family hopes they will finally get to bury him Monday, much later than is traditional in Islam. There is frustration among families at the length of time it is taking to receive the bodies.
And this is good on the perp, also at WaPo, though the headline and lede basically say everything one needs to know. Same old same old as Sandy Hook's Adam Lanza and many others:
In alleged gunman’s hometown, relatives recall violent video games, trouble with women

Oh jeez, I was crap with girls and liked Death Race 2000 and got into computers (among other attributes - hey, listened to Alice Coope and Black Sabbath) - was I 1 trenchcoat away from Columbine? One of the Columbine journalists did a 20-years-after deconstruction of everyone's failed reporting, how the killers had no real beef with anyone, not rejected,... - they were just psychopaths with a desire for attention and large bodycount.

Hoping we start worrying about Muslims getting killed in Muslim countries (and Palestine as well). 2018 civilian death toll in Afghanistan was largest ever, plus botched US bombing a few days ago killed a bunch, as did a Syrian raid on its own people.

Good video:
Makes me want to take Trump and his boorishness and narcissism out of the picture and think about this without him. New Zealand is really like a small town, strikes me that when a lot of people say "small town values", they mean acting real like this. like a small town mayor and not like an actor in a campaign or a "global leader". There is something when a country gets too big that leaders can't or don't act like this. Would signal they are not "tough". They must always be the "dad" not the "mom."

(Maori appropriation noted, "stolen" & now used quite meaningfully to define a unified national culture.)
