I suspect they're cutting off from the formal kabuki show with roles defined by the system-whatever they might be-- because she knows about celebrity P.R. as a former TV star and he knows what the old system did to his mother and others. She's tried the old system a while to make sure. The queen is 93 and Charles is 71, the old system is going down soon anyways and here the Kardashians and others like Mr. and Mrs. Beyonce are the new model. We'll see, won't we? Whatever the case, she's already a bigger celeb than any of them by simply taking them on, saying yes to the marriage. (A reminder that in the olden days royal families picked spouses for strategic reasons, they haven't a clue how to do that anymore, this may be a new model-celeb + royal.)
. Furthermore, Brexit is a good time for royals to exit if they don't want to further become a silly anachronism. If the isles become more impoverished as a result, there will be a lot more "off with their heads" talk, everybody going to be having to look for income elsewhere....
