Call it the great American sell-off . For years now Americans have been gathering and collecting at an amazing pace, filling homes that over the past half-century have more than doubled in size, to an average of nearly 2,500 square feet. And even that hasn't been enough to contain our nation's overflow of stuff. These days nearly one in 10 U.S. households maintains at least one self-storage unit, 65 percent more than did so in 1995. Filling these spaces, of course, comes naturally to baby boomers. Born into the giddy postwar climate of conspicuous consumption and weaned on decades of easy credit, they're a generation accustomed to regularly leaving offerings at the altar of retail.

I'm very impressed by this article, it's very well done, and in my experience that is not the usual case for this type of thing. She really manages to cover all the main important "need to know" points, somehow getting them all into a single piece, and also depicts the different markets very accurately. I may even use it the next time family/friends/acquaintances ask for advice on selling stuff or handling an estate.

I was drawn to it because of family estate issues and shared it with my siblings. I did wonder while reading it what you would think of it so I posted it here as well. Glad you liked it. That's reassuring. :)

In many cases, it really comes down to time is money, especially if you are not in a major metro area with a big population. You can get better prices for certain stuff by doing things like using Ebay or another appropriate market, but if you want to "broom clean" a house in a short period of time, in a location where there's not a huge variety of customers to attend a sale of a few days duration, you are bascially liquidating to resellers mostly, who will profit by taking the time to sell the items to the right buyer. She gets into this with the example of the oriental rugs and other examples. You pay a price for cleaning out an estate quickly. Of course storage fees (including the costs of keeping a house longer to use for storage) factor in, too. But it's good to keep in mind that back in the old days people didn't even have the choice of marketing to a bigger audience like with Ebay, etc.
