This is a photo of the Smith family Xmas brick.
It was made in 1956 by my sister in her elementary school art class. It is an ordinary brick, painted white with red felt glued onto it and green felt letters glued onto the red felt, spelling out NOEL. My mother has kept it all these years, through numerous moves and changes in her life, always taking it out each Christmas to display (or use as a door stop when needed.) With my mom in a nursing home, my sister received custody of the brick this year and as shown in the photo is proudly displaying it on her front porch along with some of her other Christmas decorations. I dare say it is probably the most resilient Xmas present ever made in a public school art class, and my sister, (the artist) and her art teacher (who thought up a lesson plan for grade school kids using bricks), are to be congratulated for a job well done. And to think, some people want to eliminate Art classes from public schools. Look at what one brick can do for the Xmas spirit.

This week's batch of haikus:
double haiku: May the coming year
bring enough adversity
to test your mettle.
And enough joy and
happiness to make your heart
sing and your soul soar.
-------------------------------------
double haiku: He wrestled demons,
which didn't pay as well as
praying for angels ...
But, it's a living.
And the fact is, he preferred
headlocks to halos.
---------------------------------------
He was in shock. His
precious illuminated
manuscript was real.
---------------------------------------
Standing in Times Square,
with the drunks that celebrate
watching a 'ball' drop.
---------------------------------------
He crosses the street,
nonchalantly dodging cars,
but bicycles? BAM!
-------------------------------------
Waiting and waiting ...
he couldn't take much more ... then
the other shoe dropped.
---------------------------------------------
After each rainstorm
shimmering shafts of sunshine,
broke through the grey clouds.
--------------------------------------------
If you're hunting for
the bluebird of happiness,
lure it by laughing.
-----------------------------------------------
Each day we listen,
to all the sounds around us
and hear what we like.
-------------------------------------
He toined to 'Blinky'
and said, "Ya moron, that's not
my moll, that's my mom!"
---------------------------------------
Prepping for blood work
is a 'tortuous routine';
no food or water.
------------------------------------
A strange dialect,
false moustache and wig can not
alter your spirit.
-------------------------------------
He rubs his fingers
over a long healed scar and
reflects on his life.
-------------------------------------
The kitten's whiskers
brushed across the old man's face,
making him giggle.
-------------------------------------
A blustery day
the weather outside is calm
Congress in session
--------------------------------------
Poor old uncle Mike,
slept in rocker recliner
now he can't get up.
--------------------------------------
Bayberry candles
still spread a christmas-y scent
through his apartment.
----------------------------------------
Fastidious fops
frequent fewer flophouses;
find fancier fare.
----------------------------------------
Paths to glory run
through fields of ignominy,
loathing and defeat.
----------------------------------------
Search the whole wide world,
ev'ry nook and cranny and
you will find ... more stuff.
-----------------------------------------
On his empty bed,
sits a present, wrapped, but left
out of his suitcase.

Happy New Year to everyone here at Dagblog!

These are such a pleasure to read. I really like the last one. Happy New Year and keep up the writing.
Great story of the brick, love the picture. In keeping with the story, I hope:
Teach them all at home.
Art and religion are foes!

Happy New Year, Oxy.
Her kids were home schooled,
So dinosaurs ate cavemen
and Reagan saved us.

Old acquaintances
forgot? And ne'er brought to mind?
Well, that's just silly.

I like the last one the best. The unsent thing.
She sent him away,
Or he left without a word.
Time does not decide.

Nice one, moat!
She left him speechless.
Without words, he went away ...
but took his sweet time.

She would not listen,
And left, but year after year,
He still talks to her.
by Donal on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 9:19am
HA! Excellent, Donal!
He still talks to her
whenever he needs a friend.
She still ignores him.
by MrSmith1 on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 2:15pm
He never listens.
Did you put the right socks on?
And now you know why.
by Oxy Mora on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 2:43pm
Oh no, not again!
My right sock's on the left foot!
I'll walk in circles!
by MrSmith1 on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 3:03pm
It's even harder
To know the right from the left
When she buys tube socks.
by Oxy Mora on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 3:15pm
There is no diff'rence
Between the right and left sides
And… that's what she said!
by Verified Atheist on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 3:19pm
He never got jokes.
She showed him two short pink socks.
He didn't laugh much.
by Oxy Mora on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 4:17pm
She put the pink socks
on her fingers and wiggled,
He still didn't laugh.

There is no diff'rence
between the right and the left,
that's what Nader says!
