Hours after a mysterious “earthquake” — 2. 6 on the Richter scale — registered on the devices of the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the circumstances behind the series of explosions that shook Syria overnight Sunday-Monday are starting to become clear. ... the latest strike was carried out at a time when the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is visiting the region, and just a few hours after he held talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu... The Syrian Human Rights Observatory (based in London) reported that 26 people were killed in this attack, Iranians among them.

upon clicking on your link, I note that the Times of Israel has just added this as a "top story":
Netanyahu to announce ‘significant’ new info on Iran’s nuclear program

PM to speak live at 8 p.m.; TV reports say he will reveal intel, based on trove of documents obtained by Israel, that proves Tehran is not adhering to accord with world powers

Guess he has a scandal to distract from - wasn't he going to jail for embezzling?

Ha'aretz, "1 minute ago" just published on Bibi's promised big TV appearance, changed the headline story to this, added a whole bunch of "related" links:
Netanyahu: Iran Nuclear Deal Is Based on Lies – Here's the Proof
'Iran did not come clean on its nuclear program,' Netanyahu says, saying more than 100,000 Iranian documents Israel obtained prove nuclear 'deal is based on lies' ■ Speech comes on heels of strike against two bases in Syria and ahead of Trump's decision on nuclear deal

This which I just ran across, combined with the above news, begs the question: Is Bolton calling the shots on policy?
The Trump administration just sent a dark, threatening message to Kim Jong Un
By Alex Lockie @ BusinessInsider.com, 4 hrs. ago
Though Trump often flip flops with his policy statements now, and often seems allover the place, this certainly fits with his main campaign messages on North Korea, Iran and the whole nuke issue. #MAGA bully uber alles.

Bolton has said he doesn't do wars, that's the Pentagon's job. His responsibility ends with advisories to the President that starting one is necessary and a sure win. Bolton has never to this day denied the Iraq war wasn't successful.
Bolton to Trump, "They will welcome our invasion with open arms."

Yeah, "grab 'em by the goodies, they'll let you do anything" - it's like an echo he hears, good for any iccasion.

Ok here is evidence of the same old Donald before Pompeo was confirmed, not giving a damn what Bolton or any other advisor might thinking or planning:
In private chat with senator, Trump hints at policy shift in Afghanistan — and a return to isolationism
It is unclear just how much the talks between President Trump and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), which occurred before a key vote on Trump’s secretary of state nominee, signal a public shift in policy or are just maneuvering by a famously transactional leader.
I am starting to come around to believing we can't know for sure what U.S. policy is in a lot of instances. Myself, I still suspect when he has to make a decision on this kind of stuff, he might in the end listen to Jared! Wack as it sounds, I suspect the cabinet gets no real sense of direction so they go about their business and agendas and wait for him to say no when they actually have to get a presidential ok on something because they can't trust a damn thing he says to be actual policy. And then he probably asks Jared and maybe even Ivanka what he should do....

That said, he's been consistent about not liking any kind of "nation building"operations and that's the kind of "isolationism" he supports. But his sort of "isolationism" certainly isn't the traditional meaning with no use of military force for non-defensive aims, not to mention use of trade warring. It's speak loudly and both threaten and use a big stick. U.S.A. #1 does not jive with just neutrally sitting and watching what the rest of the world is doing.

Rand Paul is the Libertarian who believes the feds should cut money on healthcare, coming from Kentucky, where half the population is on a federal healthcare program. Delusional, him and his base.
He feared the US Navy would send ebola plague ships back to infect us cuz Obama, and once suggested drones could kill liquor store thieves.
Rand is a multiyear joke at Driftglass for standing for nothing, and running away from everything.
by NCD on Mon, 04/30/2018 - 3:47pm
yes I know he's nuts but I still remember when lots of lefty peaceniks were big fans of both him and dad.
by artappraiser on Mon, 04/30/2018 - 3:54pm
It is decidedly not "isolationism." It is straight up Kissinger's Spheres of Influence without the neocon frosting.
However much Trump is deciding things, I will repeat what I have said before. With Bolton and Pompeo, the loss of Flynn from the initial lineup of Hawkish dreams has been restored.
So this was something that would have come down earlier if the cops hadn't pulled the van over in Nebraska.

Ha'aretz: Analysis: Israel Braces for Iranian Retaliation for Syria Strike – but War Isn’t Inevitable
by Amos Harel, April 30, 9:13 pm their time
There could be a lull before Lebanon's May 6 election and the Americans' May 12 decision on the Iranian nuclear deal, but revenge could come from Lebanon, Syria, Iran or further afield

We all know the 1st version imprints, and few notice the correction (or register it - the 1st more jarring version keeps its emotional intensity over time, the correct 2nd one fades in memory).
Cheap psychological chicanery. Look for more of this.
