Bree Newsome, the woman who removed the Confederate flag from its perch on South Carolina State Government grounds gave her first public comments to Goldie Taylor in Blue Nation Reviw.

Newsome says that she refuses to give into the fear emanating from the Confederate flag, she also notes that she is not an outside agitator since her ancestors came in the United States through the slave markets of antebellum Charleston. It's an inspiring read.

It says a lot about the South that after 9 blacks are gunned down in a Bible study session by a racist white terrorist, the response is black churches get burned across the south....FBI is investigating.
From the black community?
We get church services, and a non-violent protestor removing the American swastika from the South Carolina capitol grounds.
Who the bad? Which communities are replete with the intolerant and lawless?
Who are the real Christians? Who are the 'Real' Americans?

We are having the discussion about the South because a Confederate flag sits on state grounds in South Carolina. The flag became a focus after a hate crime. The initial response of the Governor was that we will deal with the flag later. The white Senator initially said the flag worked for a South Carolina. The black Senator was going to have a meeting after the funerals so South Carolina Republicans could tell him what to thing about the flag. Then they all had a change of heart. The first response to the outrage about the flag was the finger.
In the days after the massacre we had a white South Carolina Legislator tell us that the victims stood in line to be shot. The church resides on a street name after a Fugitive Slave Act promoter John C.Calhoun.The body of the slain church pastor was brought in a horse-drawn carriage past the Confederate flag flying on state grounds. The body lay in state under that Confederate flag. The President of the United States came to eulogize the pastor on the grounds of a university headed by a man who wanted the flag to stay in its original position atop the state Capitol building. The university President participated in a ball in 2010 wearing a Confederate officers uniform surrounded by black actors portraying slaves. As the President is shown, you remember that South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson was the guy who yelled, "You lie!" during the State of the Union Address.
Bree Newsome took the Confederate flag down from its perch. Once on the ground, a black law enforcement officer had to face the indignity of arresting Newsome for pulling down a racist flag. Two black groundskeepers had to put the flag back up.
We would love it if the only actions in South Carolina were those of the employee and her boss. Unfortunately, we know that an unarmed black man was shot in the black by a North Charleston police officer while the murderer of nine black Christians was fed Burger King.
In a recent poll, 50% favored removing the flag from state grounds. Fourth-six percent wanted the flag to stay on state grounds and 4% were undecided. There is not an overwhelming majority moved by the massacre. When asked if the flag represented Southern Heritage or racial hatred, most whites see the flag as Southern pride, most blacks see the flag as racist. Nothing changed after the massacre.

When I saw the initial story I had a negative reaction and thought it might even be counter-productive to the process of getting the flag taken down. But her explanation completely changed my mind. She is a brave and articulate woman and if her actions derail the process of taking the flag down, the process itself wasn't on such strong footing.
In other news, Roof's sister is crowd funding for $10K to have a proper wedding and honeymoon since her first attempt was derailed by her brother's murderous rampage. Ten % of the funds would go as a charitable gift to Emanuel Church. Am I a grouch and unsympathetic prude to think that her crowd funding in the wake of this tragedy is a tasteless opportunistic act? I do think it is tasteless, but my reaction is tempered by the fact that she probably is in shock not only by her brother's actions but at having her life plans devastated. Still, she might think first of the devastation suffered by others.

I think it is crass, but nothing to get overly worked up about. People know that they could make direct contributions to the church, so this is selecting out a specific group of people.

Seems like she's canceled the fund.
The sister, Amber, feels it's the media's fault for ruining her wedding:
and same link:
Seems like Amber feels entitled to her dreams and dream day, and honeymoon, even though her brother, on his own initiative, just deprived 9 people of their lives, and became the most notorious and repugnant murderer, in recent history of the White South.
Anyone for mint juleps on the veranda as we cry over Amber's disappointments? I'll even let the help have a small one for themselves, about 10% seems fair.
