Egypt’s Interior Minister Survives (Bomb) Assassination Attempt

CAIRO — A powerful bomb blasted through a convoy of cars carrying the interior minister along a residential street on Thursday, raising fears of a widely predicted turn toward terrorist violence by opponents of the military ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.

The minister escaped, and so did his would-be assassins. But the explosion killed at least one police officer, injured 10 others and wounded at least 11 civilians, according to an official statement from the Interior Ministry. Speaking independently, Gen. Osama al-Soghayar, security chief for Cairo, put the number of civilians injured far higher, at more than 60.

A police officer, a 7-year-old child and others lost legs or arms in the explosion, ministry officials, medics and witnesses said. Neighbors said they found pieces of flesh scattered in the street as far as 150 feet from the explosion [....]

A National Alliance to Support Legitimacy leader accused Egyptian authorities of fabricating the assassination attempt of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim on Thursday.

The Muslim Brotherhood meanwhile denounced the attack on Ibrahim's motorcade by unidentified assailants on Thursday morning, stressing it upholds peacefulness and opposes any violence against the authorities or ordinary citizens.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy warned that the incident may be a "plot" by the current authorities to justify a massacre they intend to commit against protesters on Friday.

"We reject any attempt to assassinate any leader or politician, and our ideology stands against violence and murder," Brotherhood leader Mamdouh al-Husseiny told Al-Masry Al-Youm [....]

Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.

Actions to take:

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
